The 'Grifter' was indeed several years after the 'Chopper'. The natural progression was 'Budgie' to 'Tommohawk' and eventually 'Chopper', each bike getting progressively better and having more Street Cred (although wasn't called that back in the day!) Very similar to my Porsche experience 944 to 964 to 993! Could someone please confirm that we have to list our bicycles in our signature.........

ORIGINAL: Masher My recollection was the Grifter came a long time after the chopper. Having a purple Chopper was never a good thing though [:D] Cheers Mick
I had a little red Tomohawk. I was only seven though. [&o]

My Dad did all of Raleigh's POS advertising at the time, so we had bikes like the Grifter to try out long before they made it to the shelves. Is there something wrong with me for never being interested in bikes? Parked on the drive at the time might have been the Guilietta, GTV, or GTV6. There was an early 325i, 2002, and a 5 that might have been an M5. Then early and late 944s, a Monza GTE, Merc 190 Cosworth, and for some reason a Cavalier GSI. Maybe I should list my Dad's cars in my signature.....[&:]

Oooh push bikes, I think mine cost me more to run than my car does. Did have a Raleigh Winner, possibly a contradiction in terms. I did a race recently called the Megavalanche in France and there is no way I would get the same thrill hit out of a car. The race starts with a mass start on a ski slope at 3300 metres, so still snowy and ends in the valley at the bottom. The great thing about push bikes is its 75% pilot and 25% the bike, You cant buy speed.

Agree Purple was so wrong..... Mine was Yellow and I chose it because it was the only Yellow one in the local Halfords warehouse ready for Christmas delivery [:)]

Blue Grifter, then a lovely Raleigh record sprint (black and gold) not sure this direction is helping the original thread [:D]

+1 Did you see the restoration thread of one on PistonHeads?
No, will look for it, I still have mine, though some of the original parts wore out, I used to ride it 16 miles each way to college

Nobody has mentioned the chipper! Shame. I had one and then progressed to my first racer. Yes a Raleigh. With Sturmy Archer 3 speed. Oh the embarrassment. As dad said. "You aren't having any of those silly derailleurs. Traditional gears for you son!" Can't argue with that. Mike

Never got sturmey archer gears to work proprley, no matter how often I triedto adjust them. Hateful, useless things. Always stuck in third. Couldn't afford a derailleur bike when all my mates had them. Never really got over it!!

Don't forget the Bomber, what a great name for a bike

You had to put the S/A in second gear, with the correct tower nut with two inspection holes, then peer through the holes and adjust the rod, using the turnbuckle, so that the shoulder on the rod where the half link starts is level with the end of the spindle, then lock the turnbuckle with the thumbwheel. The trouble is that if they were ridden for long periods out of adjustment the continual slipping gradually rounded of the edges of the epicyclic gears, but we are way off topic.

Was there not a mettalic green chopper with race stylee handle bars ? The new remanufactured chopper which you can buy now does not come with the knacker basher gear change and remember not to run when carrying scissors ! Used to have a hot wheels set with a turbo booster, it was a spring loaded jobbie which acted like a trigger spring when the car entered and shot the car out along the track at a high velocity, if you supidly but your finger in there which was possible you would surely loose a digit.......................methinks they would be banned nowadays. PS stlll got 10 digits [:D]

Who cares...?!! I've come to realise there's some real sad twats on this forum, get down the pub for a beer or several !!! [:D]
