US to euro lights

Hi all,

Im kind of new to the forums (in posting terms), but have used alot of the knowledge from them over the couple of years I have owned my car to keep things running!!

Got back from the Classics at the Castle (which was a great day) last night and got all inspired to sort out this problem which is preventing me from using my car at the moment (69'). I basically need an MOT, but as I have US Spec lights I am not able to pass the MOT with them.

I have fitted some new lenses (Euro Spec) all round, and then only to realise that the bulbs are still illuminating in the wrong places. I am after a bit of advice on what the best thing to do is. Im told by Max at Revival cars, who does all the work on mine, that it is a good clean example and I would hate to do anything detrimental to the looks/function of the car just to make the lights work.

I am assuming that i'm going to have to remove some of the bulbs and maybe rewire them, but im not really that comfortable doing that at this stage.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

One other thing my car failed on was the lack of an overtaking mirror as the car is a lefthand drive! Has anyone else had this problem or am taking my car to the pickiest MOT centre in the world.

We took some great pics from the day so if anyone would like any, just reply and I will post them or email them out as a batch.

Hi there,

it sounds like someone may have switched around the wiring to the housings to get around the US lenses (some people have been known to wire the indicators to the reverse lights and fit orange bulbs)

I would start by removing the indicator housings one by one and then turn on the lights/indicators and swap the wires accordingly to the correct bulb connectors, they are easy to get mixed up if the wires werent labeled when swapping around, alternatively if you're not confident doing that I'm sure Max would have no problem sorting it for you [:)]

as for the mirror... I'm not hot on mot guidelines, did it fail the test because there is no mirror on the right hand side? if so that is madness... every LHD early Porsche I have owned has only had one mirror on the drivers side and it has never ever been an issue come mot time....and I guess 99.9% of other owners will confirm this

would love to see some more pictures of the day, my camera memory card corrupted after taking just two pictures (grrrr) (I came in the Irish Green 912 tucked away in the corner in the 912 section )
 
I have never heard of failing on only one mirror, I had a very thorough mot recently and not mentioned, they even did an emission test [8|]

I dont think that someone has changed any of the wiring, I just think that the positioning of the side lights and indicators etc mean that I still get a yellow side light on the front when I change the lenses to the Euro Spec lenses.

It is also a problem that my car is in storage 120 miles away at my parents place, so I cant just go out to the garage and check anything!!

As for the mirror issue, I just think that I had an MOT station that took the new computerised descriptions literally.

Once I sort out the images from Classics at the Castle I will post them in a new post.

aaah I understand now... this was something I didnt need to tackle with my swb 912, and my early 911 already had modified turn signal housings for european lenses.

I think you really only have two options...

modify your current turn signal housings with a block off plate for the sidelight bulb..

Or...take the sidelight wiring to the headlight and install a sidelight bulb in the H4 headlight (threre should be a space available for the bulb)
