just to answer your question there were no problems at all with the clutch before this happened and yes all the symptoms you mentioned are there apart from all the noise
lumpy acceleration which was fine before also very loud and clunky and it does feel like its dragging and rubbing at the back
rubbing noise getting faster as the car gets faster
what do you mean when you say when the rubbers fail do you mean the part of the clutch
many thanks to all of you for your help i am getting it to the mechanic on monday morning to find out the bad news

Rubbers - yes, the standard clutch has a rubber centre, where most clutches have springs to form a cush-drive. Replacement clutches are sprung; the rubber was a poor design.

From those symptoms I'd possibly agree that it is a clutch, although I wouldn't be 100% certain. See what the mechanic has to say.

just to update on this problem
i got it to my mechanic and he was 100% that it was the gearbox and not the clutch
i have bought a gearbox from ebay for the same year car for £200 and it will be swapped over next week
i will of course keep you updated on the progress even if the mechanic has made an error in his diagnosis

Given the milage, and the fact that getting the gearbox out is 75% of the clutch change job, it may be worth (if you can afford it) stumping up the cost for a new clutch as well, and doing the whole lot.

That way you know the problem is solved, and you know the clutch is fine for another 100K+ miles. (If you don't do this, and the clutch fails in a month or so's time, you'll be paying to have the gearbox removed and re-fitted again.)

I know it would be more money, which you may not be able to afford, but it's an idea worth considering.

(That was a good price you paid for that new 'box BTW.)

i have now had the gearbox changed and there are a couple of things i need advice on
firstly it looks like the mechanic was right as the new gearbox seems to perform great with no noises like before but he said to me that the gearbox was slightly different to the old one
the new gearbox came from an 86 the same year as my car and when i looked at the old one i saw a vw audi stamp inside the drive shaft mounting maybe it came from a 924 or are they all made by vw?
another thing is that the speedo now does not work i took it back to him about an hour ago and he removed the cable from the gearbox and took out the plastic rod with the teeth on (dont know the proper name)
he put it back together and said it seems to be engaging ok but when i drove up the road it still did not work
last week before the gearbox problems the first digit on the speedo which was zero as the mileage is 85000 started going round and stopped on number 4 so the car now says 485000 i dont know if this has anything to do with the speedo needle not working
but once again any help regarding this or the different gearbox will be great

86 is the difficult year!
Dont worry about vw audi porsche marks there all the same.
Early boxes have 2mounts and no speedo drive later ones have 1 mount with speedo!
Id undo cable from head unit and see if it turns, as could be the cable, if it turns - its the speedo.

i have just phoned the mechanic and it looks like the replacement gearbox is a later one
but the speedo is electronic so no cable

is this the problem as it looks like the old gearbox was an early one
and the one i have now is a later one with one mount
the mechanic says to me that the speedo that bolts to the gearbox is electronic

Could be!
Wasnt sure if all later ones were electronic.
Earlt ones have mechanical drive off n/s front wheel hub.
Not aware of solution I'm afraid!

Is your an oval dash?

You can swap the only the mounts on any box to fit the car.

It sounds like your new box is actually older so has no speedo drive.

So assuming you have an oval dash car the old box will have the electronic sensor box on it. I dont know how it fits, or if its possible to take off and swap it to the replacement box.

just to update the old gearbox had what looks like 2 mounts on the top but the speedo worked fine and the car is an oval dash and was not a cable speedo
the new gearbox had a blanking plug in the drive hole
apart from the speedo not working the MPG meter is not working correctly so i think that runs off the same thing
tomorrow we are going to put the car up on the ramp and put the car in gear and the mechanic is going to play around with it he stilll thinks its probably a simple thing

What I'm thinking is, replacement box is an earlier one, so wouldn't have the neccesary gears/drive etc.

another update
i found out today that the new gearbox came from a 944 with the old speedo clocks even though the seller says its from an 86
were 944's with the early clocks still made in 86 as i thought they finished in 85 maybe it was registered in 86
this is what i dont understand
i was told on this forum that the older gearboxes had no speedo drive as they were cable operated
but this replacement gearbox has a hole on the nearside above the drive shaft exactly in the same place as my old gearbox where the speed sensor fitted but it had a metal screw in blanking plug in it
the blanking plug was removed and the speed sensor fitted in perfectly and the mechanic thinks it is engaging but the speedo is not working
as i said before the old gearbox had two mountings on top and the replacement has only one
if this is an early box why does it still have the hole in the top to fit the speed sensor ?
and if the worst comes comes to the worst can the drive be removed from the old box and put into the replacement box
maybe there is someone i can speak to on the phone for some help as i really dont fancy buying yet another gearbox
but whatever happens i will keep everyone informed as it may help someone in the future

As I said '86 cars can be almost anything! (ask Ian - Fulvia - about wheels!)

My old '83 box doesnt have the speedo drive so your new one maybe a later replacement in an older car or the casting was revised in preparation for the new style. Either way, it may be that the drive in the replacement box is u/s.

Dont know where you are but I paid 75 for a replacement box from PH Sportscars near Derby earlier this year and I'm sure they would have a suitable one for you.
