Uprated Headlamps and relay harness

Just spotted this on Rennlist

At this time of year we get many questions about how to improve the standard 944 lighting. The causes of bad lighting can be many fold - old opaque lenses, poor wiring, bad connections, dirty popups etc. Travis from Rennbay in the US has produced a kit which replaces everything - E coded Hella headlamps, wiring, bulbs and an uprated relay system all for the total price of $185 plus $38 international shipping. It comes with two sets of bulbs, one is the legal 55/60 watt, the other is illegal 90/130 watt bulbs

Wow, a tempting price even at the current shocking exchange rate. However i've been thinking about the HID upgrades so I wonder how these would compare to simply replacing the headlamp bowls themselves with a HID kit? As I understand it there is no need to upgrade the wiring harness with HID as they use alot less amps.

I put HIDs in mine and they worked very well. There are photos of the install if you seach. You do not need to change the loom at all as the ballasts only consume 35W.

I understand this kit is supposed to be an upgrade over the US-spec original lighting system, but over the Euro one ?
As far as I can gather from posts on rennlist it seems original Euro-spec lenses seem to be a popular and effective upgrade ... but then replacing 20 year-old lenses with new ones will always end up with a better lighting ... [&:]

Thats what I mean Thom. Since you can get good HID kits for £60, if you were to replace the headlamp bowls with these Hella ones, as our 20yr old originals are bound to be a bit tarnished, Then you will probably have a superb setup with no need to replace the harness. I am assuming that the HID kits provide better light than Halogen?

I am not convinced by the HID kit, though not from the user's point of view (I doubt even a brand new original set up will give half as much lighting), but rather from the other road user's point of view.
Whenever someone whith anything brighter than classic H4 drives up the road I have to keep my eyes staring out of their light beam, like on the edge of the road, otherwise my eyes hurt. It's just too bright for me.

US spec lamps don't work on UK 944s. Aside being the wrong hand they also have the wrong mountings on the back as US spec cars don't seem to have levelling motors like ours do.

I bought the IceShark upgrade with lamps and the lamps are sitting in my shed - even though they are the correct hand and diameter.

Putting new unchipped lenses on is good, as is upgrading the loom to stop voltage loss though.
