Upgrade thoughs - S2? BMW M3?

Sorry for the delayed response - I was away for the weekend.

I hear what you say Pete about the turbos, but I think an S2 would suit me better. That said, perhaps I should try a turbo too, just to check! I think the TVR Tuscan looks and sounds gorgeous, but I'd be wary of buying one, though I believe the Tuscan 2 is more reliable than its predecessor. (See the first news article here - http://www.sniffpetrol.com/issue069.html)

Some more testing to be done, but it looks like I will stay true to the 944!

A colleague had a TVR Chimaera 400 a few years back. I guess it was new or nearly new then and it was his "fun" car. I remember standing in the office car park one day talking to him about it.

Me: "So, Chris, how do you like the Chimaera?"
Him: "Oh, it's great when I can use it."
Me: "When you can use it?"
Him: "Yes, I can only drive it on cold, dry days. If it is wet, it's scary and besides, the hood leaks from everywhere and I get wet. If the weather is hot it boils and I get cooked by the engine heat. If I get stuck in traffic, it boils. So I can only really use it on cold, dry days - oh, and then I freeze."

I also remember talking to a TVR owner at the NEC classic motor show. It was up for sale at what I thought was an optimistic price.

"Yes," he said, "it is top money but it has just had the clutch done at 40,000". I expressed some surprise that he needed a clutch done at such low mileage, mentioning that my 944 was still on its original at about 130,000. "Ah," he said, "but the Porsches are properly engneered..."

TVR ownership is not for the faint of heart, it seems.
 
A friend of mine used to have a business selling parts from broken bimmers. He described the E36 M3 as like a shopping kart with a big engine, really didn't like them. Having said that the E46 seems much much better. Personally I have always had a soft spot for the ZM models such as Z3 Mcoupe or Z4M coupe just for the madness of it all never driven one of those but they are just that bit different to normal bimmer stuff.

I've always fancied a TVR, and you can pick Chimeras up pretty cheap now.

How well they handle has always been in question, but based on looks and the noise of the V8 they're pretty attractive option.
Full fiberglass body too, so very light and the only rust you need to worry about is on the chassis.

My Mate has a very nice Chimera 4.0, the Rover engined ones are the ones to go for as they have the reliability and soundtrack. We had a little fun on a wiggly B road and I was surprised how close it was to the 944T point-point, he seemed to have more outright grunt, but I had the braking (Chimeras have Granada brakes!) and the handling, although his Soundtrack was fantastic!

We stopped at Tescos for a break and mine started afterwards.....

However in 2 years that is the only time it has let him down

of course I have ribbed him mercilessly since then...until my Crank sensor went 2 weeks ago!
