Unusual "leak" - from base of passenger door seal

Hi all

I believe I have encountered a new form of 944 water problem! If I park my car with the nose elevated (like on my sloping drive), water seems to gather on the passenger doors "sill", trapped by the door seal. This pours out onto my passengers' feet when the door is opened, but also appears to seep into the rear footwell behind the passenger seat if the rain is heavy enough to fill the door sill until the water reaches the top seal. (Red arrow in photo might make this clearer!)

Is there a way around this? I don't want to pierce the door seal in case it lets water in while driving for instance. I also can't open the door on a regular basis to stop the water building up! I suppose I could trap a small piece of tube between the door seal and the door "sill" so that the water would drain through the tube under the seal before it gets high enough to seep into the footwell. Any other thoughts?

Just to add, the sunroof drains are clear, and sunroof seal is fairly new and tight. Can't be the boot seal as water would have to run uphill to get to the rear footwell.

Oh, and it's passenger side footwell only - driver's side is fine.

 
The door sits pretty well I think. A little hard to latch fully closed sometimes, but I think that's partly because the catch mechanisms doesn't like cold days.

Should the door seal allow water to drain out of the door "sill"? Or keep it there? Does anyone else get water collecting in this area?
 
I haven't seen that before - I just wondered whether it could be somehow getting there from the window scraper seals via the inside of the door - but the drains in the door bottom would have to be blocked and I think you'd have noticed half a gallon of water in the bottom of your door... Might be worth having a peek behind the door card though.
 
No, it's a new one for me too. Currently got a bit of plant stem wedged under the door seal to let water out. I believe the door vents are clear, but I will check. There's certainly not water sloshing about inside the door.
But when water goes out of the door vents, presumably it comes out behind the door seal and sits on the door sill anyway?
 
That'll be coming in at the top of the door and running down the seal and pooling there. Check the seal along the top of the door to make sure its in good nick.
 
Sorry, just seen this.

Door seal looks good along the top. Also, the water seems to be increasing (I think, could be paranoia) in the rear footwell even though it no longer builds up under the passenger door. So I'm not sure where it's coming from now!
 
Rear of sunroof or top edge of tail gate seal.Or rear side window. Or I hate to say it but have you looked inside the rear end of the sill.

Sunroof seal is good; rear side window is good as far as I can tell. (Would water run down the window then under the upholstery of the car, or would the upholstery be wet?) Sills are good and well filled with Waxoyl type stuff. Haven't checked the top edge of the tailgate seal - will do so. Will get my long suffering wife to put the hose on the car while I sit inside it in me waterproofs!
 
any progress on finding the source of the leak?
I have water accumulating on my drivers door step which gushes out over my feet when I open the door.
I believe the water is gaining access inside the drivers door via the window strip where the window glass enters the door.
 
No, it hasn't reappeared, despite some fairly hefty rain over the past couple of days. Touch wood. There has been a bit of water build up on the passenger door step, but either not enough to get into the car, or that's not where the water is getting in after all...

Does your driver's door have water in it? If it was getting in via the window glass, surely there would be water gathering in the bottom of the door? (There's no water gathering in my passenger door incidentally).

Hello, did you find a solution to your passenger door water retention? Last month I bought a 1988 944 Turbo, and have encounter exactly the same phenomenon with the rain this week. And like you it only occurs on the passenger side.

Along the bottom of the door are drainage holes, these usually get blocked up with dirt, pipe cleaners and cocktail sticks or other skewer shaped objects are good for cleaning them out. For a more thorough cleaning it is best to remove the door interior trim panel and then directly clean the inside of the door. The scraper seals on the window do let some water through but you might want to look at replacing them as well.

Yep, I know it's a long shot, but if one doesn't ask, one will nevr know. Thanks for your suggestions. BTW, the 944 in your profile photo looks great.
 
Wow, this was a blast from the past!

I no longer have the 944, alas, and couldn't remember my login to the forum either! To answer your question, I eventually started keeping the car in the garage, which seemed to solve the problem! :ROFLMAO:

Thanks for your reply. Oh how I know that feeling of forgetting a password, so I appreciate your efforts to Login. It's not even a month into my 944 ownership, amd my teenager daughter just about managed to avoid soaking her Vans...... as you can imagine, she would not have been happy.
It is a weird one, but not to worry I'm sure I can solve it. But to save a little time I did a Google, and your Post was top of the results.
My garage isn't really an option, as it occupied by my 997 ??
 
I had this once, when a friend had the car doing stuff. Soaked my ECU. I bought new seal from ebay, when it arrived it was a driver side one [8|] . Changed it anyway as it was brand new. The passenger side has never leaked since, or indeed before that occurrence. I'm starting to think he left the window open..............
