Uneven tyre wear on C2 & best tyre choice

Hello all,

The front tyres (conti-sport 225/40 18 ZR-N) on my 2000/W C2-26K , have worn on the insides 1mm through to 4-5mm tread on the outside.

Is this about right, and just how the camber is? or could it be the tow out?
Porsche have quoted me £150 approx to check this out, seems a bargain...
...but any views on this would be appreciated.

I am thinking of changing the tyres to Dunlop SP 9000, has anyone had experience with these? or could you suggest any other.

I really need a hard wearing tyre, for motorway use, no track time.

As I posted on the 996 thread relating to tyre pressures for road use, my conti sport 2' s are wearing evenly all the way across. I use it mostly for motorway use.
Unless you have lowered the car or changed something, I would strongly expect the toe is out of spec. If it is toed out, then you will wear the inside edges quickly.

I know OPC' s can do the full geometry check and adjustment, but toe-in angle is not that high tech, I would have thought a decent tyre centre (such as Micheldever) could tell you if they were out (for much less than £150).

On a 200 SX I had, it did the same, but I didn' t really notice since it seemed to be turning in better. I only guessed because it didn' t coast very well and the engine breaking seemed more effective than normal. The inside edges are harder to see.

On the wear front, although not quite the same, I used to have conti sports on a golf, and they lasted very well, when used for motorway use and general driving.

But then I used to reckon the Yokohama' s I used on the 200 SX were fine, but most other people reckon they are too soft. I think as long as you don' t use the front tyres to scrub off speed round roundabouts, they last OK.
 
I would concur with Stuart regarding tyre wear. My Pirelli Rossos are wearing evenly across the tread. After 7000 miles the rears still have 4/5mm of tread left. I ran Michelin Pilot Sports on my Boxster S and these gave around 16/17000 miles from the rears. Michelins have traditionally lasted well although I don' t know if this also applies to their high performance tyres. For motorway use the ultimate roadholding is not needed therefore, if all makes last approximately the same number of miles, just buy the cheapest Porsche recommended make. The price can vary considerably with the stickiest types being the most expensive.

All the Porkers I have had seem to have had uneven tyre wear rates, I have put this down to the high pressures they require. But your variances are large 1mm-5mm between sides is too much, I think you are wise to have your set checked.
Haven' t tried Dunlops on a 996 I have found Conti' s & Pirelli' s best on handling/feel. One tip, don' t mix tyre types (e.g front to back) & make sure you get Porsche N rated, Micheldever Tyres is also your best price check point. Let us know how you get on.
