"ultimate" 944

Saw a 968 Turbo S a few years ago at Croft, i have pics somewhere, all the 944 range have their plus and minus points, the Turbo being ultimately quicker in a straight line but thats not the point.

I love em all, this evening i have just pointed a friend towards an S2 after listening to his requirements, though admittedly he has not experienced the Boooost yet.........TBA [:D]

Interesting article Ewan, puts the subject in perspective as it was in the day according to the manufacturer.

For me, there is the Porsche association with competition and turbo-charging (not on every competition car obviously) but the lessons learned on 917's, the Can Am series, 935's and so on...pioneering stuff feeding back to road car development.....the durability which stemmed from endurance racing......the twin turbo setup of the 959.......what a heritage....

and then the 951, the turbo Cup series, with so many endurance features engineered in, an aluminuim engine block, water cooling, balancer shafts, 29kg crank good for 500bhp, forged internals, an ECU, electronic injection, AFM, ceramic valve seats, knock control, intercooler, water cooled turbo, turbo sited at the "cold side" (partly of necessity) I can agree - but to advantage, turbo mounting pedestal & oil return/cooler casting, ext oil cooler, turbo timer water pump circuit, --- all applied to the basic 944 series transaxle features of balance, engineering integrity ---- the car is a masterpiece and no other 944 model should be considered its equal.

The S2 and 968 never had the development investment of the turbo. Not to take away from the 16v head - its great if the cam chain is maintained, and greater still with a turbo fitted[8|]

Is it true an S2 will run on diesel or was someone winding me up?

Turbo is an awsome and SO underrated car, sorry to harp on about my old race car but it was essentially a road going turbo S,it still had a remote alarm and electric windows plus all the stuff that makes it road legal,it had 290 ish brake not much done as I wanted it reliable,it regularly beat full Monty lightweight S2s and 911s and even a 928 full Monty race car at Spa,It weighed as much a house but was an amazing car and built like a tank,so I can only imagine what a turbo cup car was like.Must have been awsome.
Sometimes wonder with a bit of a strip down of all the unessacery and being made into a full-time race car it would have been a really great car but at the time it was excluded from Deutsche Marques so I sold it whilst it was "known".

The turbo wins hands down every time. The best quote I ever heard describing the difference: the S2 is like a faithful old dog that brings you your slippers, the turbo just wants to chew your leg off.

Very true about the S2, but the turbo needs some serious upgrades before feeling like it's chewing your leg off. Standard turbos are sluggish IMO.

I wouldn't say a standard 944T was sluggish, after all it was standard 944T's ( except weight and slicks) that regularly beat 996 GT3's and other more modern models in the Porsche cup before they were banned from the series. However I would agree that after a few mods they are a different beast altogether that are unlikely to meet their match on the Queens highways.

Its relative, I think. Standard Imprezas are sluggish compared to a 400/400 monster, but if you got out of most cars into one youd think that they were amazingly quick.

A 220 Turbo isnt great but its quick when you get it moving - I bet that it feels pedestrian after youve driven one with more torque and a quicker spool up, let alone 320+bhp.

Are there any standard turbo's left?

Mine is, bar a boost enhancer propping up the worn wastegate spring, which belonged to Jonh Sims and was fitted several owners past.
