Tyres?

Contemplating new tyres all round. Some getting low on tread and some - sad to say - old before they are worn out.
So, time for new boots on all corners. I'm currently on Bridgestone SO2's.
Guessing I'll need: Fronts 225/40 R18 & Rears 265/35 R18.

What are you guys running? What's currently reckoned to be the best tyres for a 993RS?

I have always liked the S02.

I have also tried Conti sport contact 2, quiet especially after 888's.

Currently have Pirelli p Zero Rosso.... they were a deal and I like the extra rubber of the rim protection to save the Speedlines from getting kerbed.

I have done most of my RS miles on "R" type rubber, so any of the above are fine for road use, if an occasional track day is a consideration I would go for the S02, or Conti for total road use.

Go for P Zeros in additional to special club deals from Pirelli
the tyre dealers are giving good discounts .
My car feels quite different and drives so well on her new PZ boots

Three different recommendations, If you weren't confused before ,you surely are now! Whist I don't own an RS, My Carrera has more or less the entire suspension of an RS and 18" wheels and I've worn out several sets of S02's which i like ,but can be a little noisy (not when measured against toyo r888) Plus one set of Goodyear eagle F1 assemetric(no longer available and no Porsche approval) some horrible Bridgestone RE050A, which i just couldn't wear out! . I wouldn't have thought you could go too far wrong with either conti's/michelin's or bridgstones for a road based car which ages it's tyres before they wear out? In the Porsche classic tyre tests of recent times, the P Zero's never seemed to score that highly, I think the contis had the best overall scores.

Most Kn owners go through tyres like no tomorrow as did I
before fitting Bridgestones for summer and Pirelli I &S in winter.
If you are looking for good wear based on my heavy car i would go for Bridgestones.
There again how much do you use your car ?

My Cayenne (2011 3.0d) is at 60k miles and came new with Conti 'all seasons'. First set were changed at 30k mls (but still had a few ks left), the second set still look good and I would expect 35k from them. Oh, and 35mpg without really trying.

On a 993 with 18" wheels, a 'quiet' tyre is nice, but Goodyear F1s don't seem to be N 'spec'.

Michelin Pilot Sports are popular, but Supersports might be better for an RS.

Thanks for all your replies and the useful insights.
I've subsequently discovered Porsche themselves recommend the Bridgestone S02, the Continental Contact 2 & the Pirelli P Zero Rosso.
I'll probably plump for the Pirelli or Conti. I will let you know how I get on.

in my experience , for 90% road use, the rosso relatively hard wearing and best all round grip in wet or dry ........usually some good deals around too........dont knock it, Kwik fit have superb deals on Pirelli gear and decent local fitter who does nt wreck ur speedlines

I plumped for Pirellis.
They are P Zero Rosso, N4's.
225/40 ZR18 + 285/30 ZR18.
Just under £600 for the four.

First impressions are good. Better than my - old & hard - Bridgestones.
Fresh rubber with ample tread certainly makes a difference.
And it gave me a chance to drive the car in the snow on salted roads.... []

285/30 rears? That's quite a jump up on standard which is already pretty close to the bodywork. Do you have any problems with the tyres touching the bodywork especially when going fast on bumpy roads or on track? It presumably must also change the handling balance towards understeer? As far as I know that size isn't Porsche approved and part of the reason you went with Pirelli was because they were Porsche approved......[&:]

No, 'never had any problems with the width. Even on track days.
Yes, the book says 265/35 but I discovered the tyres I already had fitted through the whole of my ownership were 285/30.
So I went with that again. I'm a maverick.... []

If anything touched u can roll the lip on the arches there's a Porsche tool to do it
In my experience every wing slightly different let alone suspension settings

Michelin pilots p1ss on the contis, so2 and pirelli IME, had all of them

agree re Michelins ,however they usually cost about 30 % more ,even from Micheldever
