tyre size on 944

Guest

New member
just bought my first 944 and the rear tyres are very low.
just interested in what experience people have of brand and size.
the current size is 185/70/15, they do seem rather narrow.
was just wondering if its possible to fit wider rear tyres, 215/70/15 or even wider.
will this upset the balance or handling of car?
many thanks

Phillip,

Subject to the age of the car, your only limitations are:-

a) What tyres will fit on the existing rims

b) What wheels will fit with larger tyres

The smaller tyre size shouldn' t reduce your enjoyment. My original lux had 225 tyres all round, and was a right laugh. It would turn in well and you could steer the back end with the throttle (slide the back out). Hours of fun.

I now have a Turbo with 255' s at the back and it doesn' t ballance as well. It also tracks on uneven surfaces. You have to be far more brutal to get it to move around and, because of its understeer tendancies, have to let off to ballance it and get it to turn in prior to giving it some stick.

The moral of this story - big tyres aren' t necessary for big fun - They do look the nuts though[:D]

thanks for tips,
have found a good deal on 205/60/15 Fulda' s.
do you think they would be OK?

I' ve not heard any comments regarding Fulda tyres either good or bad, I' m afraid.

A lot of 944 owners, myself included, go with Continental Conti Sport Contacts. These are N1 tyres - the N1 noting approval by Porsche following a level of design input.

Hi Phillip,

For a definitive answer you need to tell us the year and model of 944 that you have and also what style the wheels are (cookie cutters, Fuchs, tele-dial etc) and finally what the width of the wheel is in inches. There are some pretty techy people on here (not me) and they should be ale to look up what you should have fitted and any other size options you can go for.

My ' S' came with 215 Yokohamas fitted to 15" tele-dials. They' re a good grippy tyre, but as John points out, the width makes the steering bounce around a bit on bumpy country roads, which is where I do most of my driving. It also takes a lot more ' commitment' to slide the car, although when it does it' s nice and neutral [:)]. I might go for a slightly narrower tyre next time, just so the handling is more progressive.

I have a 1984 944 Lux with the cookie cutter wheels it came with 225 from new as this was an option at the time so im sure anything upto that is fine
