Tyre Size/ Fusch or Steels!!!!!

912UK

New member
Right I am in a dilema. I like the look of the steels on my car it suits it. I have a set of 14" Fusch and a set of 15" Fusch.

The front tyre size on my car is stanard 165 80 15 they look great on the front. The rear the guy told me that they were the same size as the front but 185 width C*** look at them they look a lower profile. So what size tyre do I fit on the rear??

I have a pic of the org steel with the 185 60 15 and the other with the Fusch with a massive 205 70 15 on it too large I think.

?????? 195 60 16?? 195 65 15?? there was a web site with a table that showed you what the tyre size did to the speedo but I lost it

The 14' s look to small I think.

And the other pic I want to fill the height of the arch up abit. And then lower(the car) just a tad so I don' t want it rubbing out on me

The closest available size to the original 185/70 x 15 (fitted as original equipment to 6x15 Fuchs) is 196/65 x 15.

Nick - what' s this ' 67 S that' s just appeared in your signature ?

These are 195' s (Michelin) on my car (without engine).
I normally run the car ' low' and these have been great, a touch on the large size maybe? But when the engine is in it looks kinda mean and growly...

Car came with ' steelies' and the Fuchs were polished when I bought them.
They havn' t been polished in a while so they look a bit dull[:(]
There was a thread on the ' classic and heritage' about wheel finishers with lots of numbers/contacts.
They are a bit of a pain to keep clean as you really need to take them off to do a proper job, but it' s worth it[:D]

Here is a 3/4 view.
The tyre size was the same all around on the 912.
The ride height was slightly higher than a 911 too.
Along with the de-tuned engine I think Porsche wanted to make the 912 look and feel less powerful than the 911.
As we know we can make amends [;)]

Still confussed

I have as things stand 165 80 15 on the front they do look great really fill the arch

on the rear I have 185 60 15 I think I would like 195 65 15. can you get 195 70 15 ?

I am right in saying that the one to go for is 195 65 15??

That tyre size cal was not the one I had just before but cheers I will enter the details in and see what we get cheers

just re trimming the inside of my car out. I forgot the country' s biggest Trade fabric place is just down the road from me and guess what I am in the trade. He has got a vinyl in black in several differnet grains I picked one that was not too far from the org. I redid my back parcel shelf and it looks great. So I have moved on to the other panels. My 912 has never seen so much work in all the time I have owned it all at once. Bad news carb leaking need to call carb exchange on Monday grrrrrr 912 at 356 int ??

Still confussed ?

205 on the back are too large195 fine but nor sure how much of a wall to have 60 or 65

195/65 will give you a more compliant ride, fill the arches more & offer a wider choice of tyres - 195/60 will give a harsher ride, make your speedo read fast & leave more of a gap between the top of the tyre & the wheelarch.

cool that sounds just like the info I need .I think the 195 65 15 sound right. just out of interest will the speedo be right with 195 65' s

M

Believe it or not, the overall diameter (& width!) can vary from one brand of tyre to another for a given size - but in general a 195/65 will make your speedo read slightly lower than the original 165x 15.

FOUND IT GREAT LINKhttp://www.miata.net/garage/tirecalc.html

Looks like I have been robbed of my cash at this rubbish tyre place a few years back.

I think 195 60 15 are going to go on the back as 65 profile will raise my speedo by 2.5mph and with there being more speed cameras in the UK than useful things like road signs I will have to keep it acurate.

As for the front my 165 80 15 I have been robbed they should have been 165 70 15 but I can' t just change them as that will be more money so I will have to stick with them they really do fill the arch out nice.

No 911/912 Porsche was ever fitted with a 165/70 tyre as original equipment.

The standard fitment for a ' 69 912 (according to the Driver' s Manual*) was 165HR15 - the aspect ratio of which was 80-82%.

Therefore, if you replace this with a 195/65 tyre, according to the tyre calculator in your link, the circumference will be 1.6% less.

If you replace the original tyre with a 195/60 tyre, the circumference will be 4.7% less.

* I have a brand new (old stock) original Driver' s Manual for a 1969 912 (plus most 911 models from ' 68-' 72) for £20 if anyone' s interested.

Hi Mark
Sorry not to be much help, I had the same quandry when I replaced my tyres.
Here are some pics from some early brochures/reports to give an idea of ' original' look. Maybe they will confirm your goal? in terms of the look you are after.
