Tyre replacements

A cautionary tale. My rear tyres are now down to the legal limit and in the days beteween Boxing Day and today I have been trying to locate rear tyres for my rear 19" wheels. Not an wasy thing. After much hunting I will have the new tyres delivered to the fitting station in about 10 days! These are not my first choice. Would have liked to replace all four tyres with Michelin PS2 but it is impossible to get any idea when the rear tyres will be available. Loads of fronts available. So I have opted to replace the rears with Contis' as supplied by Porsche when new.

Its lucky that this is not my main car! I think the moral of this story is to have a replacement set available when the tyres have worn down to 3mm. If you are unfortunate to have a rear puncture I think you will be truly ********d.

Does anybody else have the same experience.

Not with Porsche but I had a similar problem with a 330ci sport when I had a pucnture a couple of years ago. There were allegedly production problems of what (I think) were Michelins and it took days to find the right tyre.

Funnily enough, on an earlier post you'll notice that I knocked back my OPC when they wanted to put 2 new rears on at it's service just before Christmas. Glad I did now, there is comfortably 2mm left before the tread indicators. What with wet cold roads, I reckon there's at least another 2-3 months in them. I may sound tight but I'm not as rich as some of you boys clearly are!

A good point worth making though, Jonathan.
 
We all have our favourites but for those who havent, Micheldever Tyres for me is the only place for tyres. Been going to them every 12 to 18 months for the past 15 years. At Micheldever Station near Winchester.

I had a rear puncture, was transported to OPC Reading, left the car overnight and a new Michelin PS2 was fitted the following morning. No issues other than the crazy high price tag!!

My personal concern right now is that as I have TPMS I need to get an OPC to refit the tyres and thus I end up paying a fortune more than if I shopped around for them.

Is that 2mm above the tread indicator (ie 3.6mm of grip) or just 2mm? if the latter I would consider changing - in the summer you might get away with it, but any standing water on cold wet roads, and tread depth gets critical.... it'll cost a lot less than wrapping a car round a tree!
 
Yep, that's 2mm before I get to the tread indicators, so if the tread indicators are 1.6mm deep, then I have at least 3.6mm in total, or 4mm if the tread indicators are 2mm themselves.

I'll get them changed shortly, but not for a month or two.
