??? just idel confusion,

what sort of milage would you expect from a new set of tires, approx, and if I track the car does anyone know how much shorter the life span would be?

Regards

Too many variables Allan!

But first - the biggie. What car are we talking about? A 996 is completely different tyre-wear wise than a 924 for instance.

point taken, it is a 996 C2, on 18" wheels, the main reason for the question is a descision over make of tyre for the replacement of the Cont sports on her at the moment.

I have heard many things about so many different tyres, and have been around Goodwood, on a set of Kumo, in a 964, which after I was impressed by how sticky they were, very similar to the Mitchelin' s, however having always gone down the route of manufacturers recomendations, I' m not sure as to milage expectancies of tyres, I' m currently on about 11K miles/year so how long would a set last, driven moderately.

One of the other points is that they are half the price of Mitchelin, but the performance is really the deciding factor. At the moment I do not know which way to go, wether to opt for the Kumo' s, see what they are like, if I dont like them for the road keep them for the track and opt for a set of Pilot Sport.

So any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

Allan,

Another solution (as you are making loads-a-money out of Barfrooms no doubt) is to buy a set of seondhand wheels for the track days. Put some soft rubber on them and keep your best wheels and rock hard tyres for sight seeing and shoppin' (I-O-W, Eynsham hall, Leggo Land, Plumb Center etc). That way if you clip a kerb you don' t have to fork out for new set of 996 wheels and your existing wheels will stay looking luvverly.

Often see secondhand wheels in back of Porsche Post, 911 & Porkie World, GT Purely Porker etc.

Two routes fro some good, local advice:-

Peter Caulfield at Rivervale (10273 700911) sees countless 996s with different brands of tyres and can at least give you an opinion.

David or Colin at Elite (the David in Sales) on 01403 253226 will also give an opinion (and a good price).

On minor point that could be important. It is worth informing your insurance company if you fit tyres that are not on the approved Porsche fitment list. They probably won' t care but if you do decide to explore the greenery it' s one less thing for them to use when wriggling out of paying up!

regards

Peter

P.S. I' m old fashioned and like B/stone S02s for the road and Michelin PSC for the track.

Thanks for your input, guys, will talk to Paul and Peter at Rivervale, Dave or Colin at Elite.

I do need them sorted hopefully either before or on the BBQ night they are holding, (free burger with every full set of tyres). down to the last 3mm of tread and screaming for grip.

Yep barfrooms arn' t to bad just like kitchins, Gary, might have a look at set of second hand wheels (as long as they are not still warm), just have to ask the boys to keep their eyes open, you never know.
