Having just fitted refurbished Cup wheels, close inspection of the original wheels was a shock - the tyres are noticeably perished. Considering the stresses they go though (within the prevailing speed limits, you understand) close examination of a cracked sidewall is scary. The production date is at the end of a character string on the sidewall that starts "DOT ... " - the last set of 3 or 4 numbers is the week and year. So for example 408 would be week 40 of 2008, and 3504 would be week 35 of 2004. The fronts (original size 195/65) are 14 years old, and looking at my history file that is 46,000 miles, with 4mm tread still left. Previous owners were clearly careful drivers. Worth checking the sidewalls closely, if there is a history of low annual mileage.
