Turbo vs Supersport

I am doing my homework on the possibility of buying either a 911 930 Turbo or the Super sport version from the 80s.

I would like to hear from owners or people that have more knowledge than I do on both of these cars, which would be the best buy?

It would be nice to purchase one of these and run it and enjoy while hopefully it would hold its value or even increase🤞

At present looking around the Turbos are from 110k upwards and just recently Borders had a nice Supersport at 119k,

If people could let me know your experience and comments on such ownership, running costs, servicing etc, I would greatly appreciate it

My last 996 Carrera 4S was bought with zero knowledge and reading about them now, perhaps I was lucky.

Thank you

I appreciate that I’m biased, but I did have a 3.2 Super Sport cabriolet for a while, and found it deeply disappointing; all show and no go. In fact, when I wanted topless motoring, I used my TVR Griffith instead.
The performance of the 930 is on a different scale entirely; nothing beats the push in the rear that you get when the turbocharger kicks in. Having said that, if you choose to, you can pootle around all day within the national speed limits without ever disturbing the beast lurking beneath your right foot!

Great dilemma to have! Like the comment above, I’m firmly in the 930 Turbo camp.

The Supersport looks fantastic, but the 930 is the true icon of that era. There is absolutely nothing that replicates the feeling of that old-school turbo lag followed by the massive shove in the back. It’s an event every time you turn the key.

Regarding values, the 930 Turbo will always be the pinnacle collector's car from that generation, so your investment is very safe there. However, you need to go in with your eyes open regarding running costs. Parts are getting pricier, and servicing a turbocharged classic requires a specialist who knows exactly what they are doing. Make sure you buy one with a thick folder of service history, or keep a hefty contingency fund ready!

In my view sports cars are purchased on the Three S's.

Sight
Sound
Speed

So for the Supersport in my case Sight was the most important factor.
Nothing like the sound of a flat 6 so Sound came next.
So Speed is not so important to me and that left Speed in third place.

For you the Three S's will no doubt have different percentages.

Cars of the age of the SSE and the 930's need to be the subject of a PPI. PPI is not optional IMO but essential.

Values. The real value of any car is the enjoyment of ownership. At the end of the day if you decide part with the car yes it's nice if you made a couple of bob.
However, the true value is the pleasure you have had with your pride and joy.

Good luck and enjoy your search, its the first step of ownership.

Picture of my SSE owned for many years and now enjoying life in Queensland Australia.

Well that's an interesting dilemma, since they look identical from the outside.

I've never driven a turbo, but never found the Supersport wanting, especially once it's properly set up.

I'm not sure how you'd choose between the two. They'll have different characteristics so you'll have to go drive them to see how each fits.

I've had mine 21 years and 100,000 km of fun and plenty of European trips. As I've got older I have to admit to finding a long Euro trip when it's hot harder work. I'd still do it though.

I'm spoilt by having modern and much faster toys, so it would be tempting to use one of them instead.
