Turbo sump gasket

Well my 944 has disgraced itself by throwing up its first unexpected large bill after a mere 9 years of ownership[:D]. There is a leak from the sump gasket. Only a small leak but it is directly above the exhaust so the fumes and plumes of white smoke when it has been unused for a while are not ideal! I understand this is a very labour intensive job, requiring the crossmember to be lowered.

So, faced with approx 14 hours of labour, are there any "while you are in there" jobs I should get done? I will get the oil pickup pipe checked and I guess it is possible to inspect the bearings for wear. Any other suggestions appreciated.
 
14 hours?? , that's a clutch time for a 220, I know it's a long job, I've done it myself but I don't remember it being that long? I see your cars a Turbo S?, does it have the split cross over pipe, should save a little time? I suppose the most obvious job that could be done at the same time would be new bearings for the crank but that may be more trouble and costly than its worth.

14 hours is the worst case estimate so hopefully could be a lot less. It does have the crossover pipe and had a nice shiny new wastegate last year so that should come apart relatively easily. It's going to be annoyingly expensive for such a relatively cheap part but I am keen to get it done ready for some track day fun [:D]

The bottom end has only done 119k and I have no reason to believe it is in any way worn, but seems worth checking while the sump is off.
 
Are you absolutely sure it is the sump gasket and not oil running down the back of the engine from the rear seal or the rear of the cam cover?

Unfortunately yes, definitely the sump[:mad:] . Thanks for the suggestion though

This statement says a lot about these cars.
 
I have a new genuine sump gasket here if needed. The bolts from the turbo to the crossover pipe will be well seized and it is a big job getting them out. Turbo out job usually which is a day in itself as they are such a pain to get to!

I would also do the engine mounts Max at Frazerpart has them for £30 + VAT at the minute so cheap as chips. I would also be looking at the steering shaft and UJs, the steering rack. All of the bushes and ball joints on the wishbones. The caster mounts. Those are the immediate ones but with so much access to the bottom of the engine the list could go on and on and on. Might be worth checking out the conrod and big end bearings. Although at 163K mine practically looked like new.
 
Thanks for all the suggestions. Fortunately most of the items have been replaced during my ownership so should be fine. Engine mounts are worth a look though, especially at that price, thank you.

Looks like a large-ish bill at this rate so will have to do a few extra track days this year to get my money's worth (well that logic makes perfect sense to me anyway [;)]
 
If you do lot of track days, I Think that there is a sump baffle mod that would be worth doing while it's off.

Also, maybe tap it for an oil temperature sender?

Ooh that's an interesting thought, thanks Graham. The Indy I use race a couple of 968s in the club championship and are well up on 944s too so I will definitely ask their opinion on baffled sump.
