Turbo / S2 Front Radial Mount Caliper Washers

I've a question about the radial mount calipers, I noticed on the parts diagram that there was a tensioning washer supposed to be used when mounting them. When I removed mine there appeared to be just bolts used, however there does appear to be a washer sitting inside the countersunk hole in the caliper. I tried carefully to remove this "washer" from the caliper but it was either stuck to the caliper through corrosion or not supposed to be removed.

Anyone have any feedback on this? I don't want to damage the caliper if they aren't supposed to be removed but I wanted to make sure all the correct hardware is used when I refit them.

See below for a picture of the caliper showing the "washers" and also a picture of the washers I ordered from the parts diagram (which appear to be identical).

Your diagram there looks like axial mount, not radial mount?

Not sure about the washers, I've had my radial calipers on and off many times and I can't ever remember a washer on the bolt. That's not to say they shouldn't be there though...

They're just shims between the steel bolt and alloy caliper.

The diagram doesn't show radial mount but the part on the right-hand side is for the radial mount caliper. I'm thinking that the shim / washer on most people's calipers has just become one with the caliper over time due to dissimilar metals being used.
 
I can sell you some MO30 calipers with no plate lift, intact bleeder threads and loose washers. :)

I already have some M030 calipers with no plate lift and intact bleeder threads (y)

Getting ready to paint and rebuild them the same way I did the rears.

 
How did you strip the paint from them?

Got a tin of paint stripper gel from an automotive paint supplier, very strong stuff. Scrubbed them with some small plastic bristle brushes and some scotch-brite pads. The heavy corrosion around the bolts I removed using a brass bristle brush (going to use some Bilt Hamber Deox-Gel as well this time). For the aluminium corrosion under the guide plates, just a gentle filing with a straight file, filled any pitting with some jb-weld. and sanded it flat. Had to replace one piston as it had a little pitting, got a replacement from frentech which was identical to the factory ones. When reassembling I put a little silicone grease under the guide plate to help prevent reaction of the plate against the aluminium (even though the paint should help).

Interestingly the calipers appear to be anodised from the factory and then just clear coated, so they aren't painted black but anodised black. I found this when stripping the paint as the aluminium stayed black.



 
So the answer is yes those washers / shims do come out! and the part I ordered was the correct replacement.

I carefully cut a slit into the shim using my dremel, and then knocked it round using a chisel (old flat blade screwdriver). Once it was loose I was able to slip a stanley knife blade between the caliper and the shim and it popped out.

No just having the bolts cleaned and plated in my next batch, they aren't stretch bolts according to the WSM and can be reused.
