Anyone have any experience / ideas about the external mirrors?

It seems that if you want them to fold then the mirror design is changed to Turbo which doesn't seem as nice as "Sport Design"

My car is rarely parked in public places but it spends a lot of time on the ferry and people seem to use the current ones as handholds and I would quite like them to move inwards electrically.

Without seeing either in the metal I am finding it difficult to decide.

Btw anyone think that the adaptive cruise control is worthwhile. It does add that "third eye" to the front grill and I am not sure that I like it.

My girlfriends Jeep Cherokee has this as standard but I haven't had a chance to use it on a motorway yet for which I guess it is designed.

There were a few spec suggestions on the 997 forum which I would like to look at again so if anyone can direct me to them I would be grateful.

I am specking mine on Tuesday morning.

I've not used Porsche Adaptive Cruise, but I have driven a Rolls Royce with intelligent cruise (same system).

It is uncanny, and very clever. So much so, that you could use it on A, B and urban roads where you wouldn't consider standard cruise. It is a bit intrusive at times, but quite an interesting safety device.

I might spec it on a luxury saloon, but probably not on a 911.

turbo is much wider at the back than C2, so mirrors stick out less when you draw the line from the rear to the front ...

Thanks all and thanks Clive for directing me to the previous thread. Losing memory quickly these days, better order quick before I forget what I want!

Still undecided about mirrors and Adaptive cruise though although the former is free!

You're welcome Michael,

I think the folding door mirrors are a good item for parking and manoeuvring.

I just can't see how adaptive cruise is worthwhile at that price - unless you're thinking of falling asleep at the wheel occasionally, of course! [8|]

All depends on where you do most of your driving and depth of pocket. I guess.

Good luck with the spec. tomorrow. Be interested to hear what you decide.

I agree about the cost of the adaptive cruise control and it might encourage me to fall asleep!

I am looking forward to some long motorway driving over the next few years and I might be sorry later if I omit it now.

It will probably be a last minute decision or flipping a coin!

I read you can have the normal cruise retrofitted at a later date- giving you the basic system if that does the job.
I gulped at the cost of the adaptive system!
Not sure I'd need adaptive on a sports car...[:)]
 
Porsche Adaptive Cruise

For added safety, the system also features integrated Porsche Active Safe (PAS). The system visually and audibly alerts the driver in the event of a sudden decrease in distance and briefly tugs on the brakes. It can also intervene in the braking process and apply increased braking pressure through to all-out emergency braking, if required.

Seems like a useful safety feature to me as none of us is infallible (or getting any younger). Only problem is the bloke behind probably won't have it but, hey ho, it won't be on your insurance. For £1300 it would represent less than 1% of the purchase price. I would have it.

Personally I'm not keen on gadgets taking over control of the car and applying the braking system when I'm not expecting it.

Still if I were an old man with not much car control, I'd be looking for all the help I could get, I suppose! [:D]

Don't knock it until you've tried it.

Basically if you do any kind of motorway driving then its a must have option.

I use the system on my new Cayenne every day and at some point on every journey - even if its on an a-road with traffic.

Standard cruise is next to useless in this country given how much traffic is on our motorways.

Retrofit means it going to cost more later!!



I have ordinary cruise control on my current Turbo and wouldn't be without it, too many speed limits here!

I guess with the emergency stop function that's the whole point - you're not expecting it!

I think in the event of an emergency stop from motorway speeds (a lorry had a blow out in front of me on the M5 last night and dropped a tyre in the middle lane, but it was quiet so went around easily) the adaptive cruise would react faster initially, even than someone with razor sharp reactions like yourself, and then you take over. Of course if you drive with the correct distance at all times then it may be superfluous. And, presumably, it is switchable?

Edit - btw, at 70 mph (if you are doing that[;)]) with an average reaction time of 0.7 secs you will travel 70 ft (5 car lengths) before you hit the brake pedal.

Have to get adaptive cruise now. Just coming home in my girlfriend's Cherokee at 40 mph limit and some prat in a lorry pulled out straight in front of me and hardly accelaerated! I could have dealt with it easily as have done so many times before but the car braked and "bonged" before I had a chance to react.

Very impressive so I will just grit my teeth and pay up. After all I keep my cars for at least five years and this may well be my last fun car,

PS for Alan

Just struggled to renew my Multi +IR to get everything in order before all the EASA rubbish. Had to use a B55, nothing else available. Are you keeping up your licences? it is getting very expensive now that we pay GST on everything although thankfully itb is only 5%

 
As I said, it's less than 1%!

No, not keeping up the licences Michael. But B55.... ah that brings back fond memories![:)]
 
I agree with Alex, I have it on my Cayenne turbo and it makes distance driving fatigue less. I've also spec'd it on my new C4S along with folding mirrors (sorry all you purists). [:)]
