turbo exhaust required for trackdays

Hello everybody., I took my turbo out today and the tail pipe fell out of the back box! so I now need a new back-box/system - depending on price. I would like stainless steel but am aware that they can be quite loud and that most track-days have a relativley low noise limit so would apreciate it if any of you guys out there that do track-days could tell me what systems you use and if you have had any subsequent problems with noise then I can try and make a decision that suits my budget.

Thanks Chris

P.S. Its a 1990 H reg - so I reckon that means I may not need a Catalytic Back-box - is this correct?

Essential styling - nice construction - not too loud for track or long journeys but sounds a lot nicer under acceleration.

Just a couple of points; a Turbo will be quieter than an S2 because it has a turbocharger sitting between the exhaust ports and the end of the tailpipe, and the cat is at the front of the system; all back boxes are the same.

Andy is right that you don't need a cat, K plate and later was the cut-off. Removing the cat make the turbo whistle sound much louder but you'll also notice 300-500rpm quicker spool-up too.

I have a Hayward and Scott on my Turbo (well, in the garage actually) which was all the rage before these new-fangled Essential Styling exhausts were developed. I don't think it's very loud but bizarrely Tony is the best guy to tell you what it sounds like as he's heard it from close up outside the car and I haven't.

I go with Tony, 'cos I've got one to.

They ES/Janspeed oval tail pipes look a bit big until they get dirty then they look just the right size and the standard ones look weany.

Essential Styling and Janspeed developed the box in such a way that it woudn't be too lound for track days.

Rick has a prototype two pipe ES rear box and that is very load - so Turbots can be made to sound loud if you want them to be. [:)]

If Chris's car is anything like mine was when the tailpipe fell off it'll be pretty loud already.

Fens Hayward and Scott exhaust did indeed sound great but IIRC it is nearly twice the price of the ESS one and although I haven't heard mine externally it sounds fine when passing through tunnels and under bridges [:)]

For the more budget conscious [:D] I have the Dansk polished stainless steel back box sold by Bert Gear at www.berlyn-services.co.uk this is only £150 and has the same size tailpipe as the original. It is not a performance box like the ESS, and it puts out the same noise as the original.

thanks for the info guys - looks like it will be the 'ES' route.
and Fen you were right about the noise without the tailpipe its fairly loud and certainly louder than I want.
Anyway cheers guys and here goes with the first step down the modifying route[:D].

Chris 951,
Have you had your ES backbox fitted yet? I had mine up on a ramp the other day and notices a dirty great crack around the weld on the pipe into the backbox. I have spied the ES backbox and it looks OK so was wondering how you were getting on with it.

Did you go for the oval pipe or the twin pipes?

Cheers.
