Turbo Engine Rebuild

Wow you spent more on your engine than I did on the whole car, and Dan spent more on his than I have spent in 9 years including buying the car, glad I’m not a power freak

tell me about it Martin! and i bloody forgot about £9500 on tuning parts and i’ve not even yet bought a maff or stand alone ecu yet []it soon ads up over the years ,…and there not joking it’s a very slippery slope. i am the same with my other hobbies but i can say proudly that i do all my own work or i honestly wouldn’t even entertain all of what i have set out to achieve.

if we all go electric one day (hopefully not! i will be converting my porsches myself when that time comes for sure . i love them too much!

I've got everything to build a 400+ bhp 3.0 turbo engine, and now a double garage to do it in. 15 years ago it seemed like a good idea, but unless my engine goes pop, the motivation is very low to get stuck into it.

Yes It's a chunk of cash Martin, but the options were selling with a goosed engine or breaking the car. Neither appealed to me. I can't see me parting with her, so it should be money well spent in the long run to have a fresh, uprated engine, no leaks, new uprated clutch and lots of other new stuff. Plus the car is worth way more with a fresh engine than a goosed one, and if I sold now I'd likely recoup the outlay and more. But I'm not selling, it's all just for me!! Plus I've done well money wise for what's been done it would seem, so that will do for me.

Stuart buddy, I meant no disrespect

its your car your money, and the logic is sound,

I think my car is more than fast enough to loose me my license, I would spend money on bouncy bits and stoppy bits and cosmetics, but that’s me,

i have zero motivation at the minute Blade ,…with these 3 young children zapping all my time , and this cold weather ,…i honestly don’t know how i’m gonna do it ,…

it’s gonna have to be a night thing few hours every night in the summer to build this twin scroll custom turbo back 3” jobie,…the ball ache is the twin scroll from manifold to turbo ,..especially in the turbo area is incredibly increadibly tight,…and will consist of multiple custom cut and welded pie cuts , which = a hell of allot of fabricating work . i’ve already had to relocate the dipstick and had to fabricate new bracket in correct position to fuction as it should , and modify all sorts to get the large turbo to just clear the manifold ect.

all very interesting but extremely labourious . i’m also fitting x2 waste gates so if i can pull it off it will be very interesting once complete but we all have so many different states of tune which is what’s very interesting about our cars.

i won’t see full benifits untill i lay out another large amount after this on stand alone and maff ect , but for now this will be enough to get over . it’s been laid up for few years now where i’ve just not had time , so would be amaizing to drive her this year fingers all crossed

I have to admire your patience Dan. I got motivated to build the 3.0 engine 2 or 3 times in the past, but each time there were issues sourcing the pistons. Managed to buy a set of 3.0 Wossners from Hartech last year, just in case.

No offence taken Martin! I'm ultimately not really looking for any more performance (got more than enough already for my talents!), just reliability. I've ended up with some better than stock parts out of fortune and common sense more than anything and it's made sense for the build. I can assure you if this turns out a reliable engine there will no wicks being turned up!! I just want to drive the thing and see people admiring it as it passes! [8D]

Cheers

That's the spirit Stuart.....power and reliability. A trait that rarely goes hand in hand when talking modified cars..??

Good luck with the build.

If it was in my garage - it’d be getting built [;)]

There was a time when I intended to build it up, and keep it on a stand. There was a 'situation' getting the pistons from the US though. I'd still need a clutch, and most likely liners fitted. So probably the thick end of another £3k to put it in the car, doesn't make sense to spend that unless I have to.

There is a guy on FB that’s done this multiple times, last spend on a motor $27,000 with 600 bhp, says it’s almost un driveable, at which point I have to ask why bother

i agree that 600 would be pointless in our cars ….i am aiming for 400-450 but tuned by gears to how i like it . when mine was around 300 and was doing 21 psi of boost it was sublime to drive and have to say shockingly fast and was beating cars with a good 100 bhp more as standard . for me it’s not about having a higher bhp then others,…it’s the drivability and how it puts it down

I can't see the point either, when Tubotim built his 3.0 16v turbo monster, I thought an awd 911 turbo would have made much more sense. IMO what the 944 turbo needs is 400bhp and less lag. Though there was a time when ropey 968's were £4-5k and I looked for one to build a 968 RS replica. Trouble was a certain breaker seemed to mop them all up.

Small update, short motor and head have now arrived back at mates garage. Need to get over and get some pictures before we bolt the head on. Also need to drop the steam vent kit off at same time. Not sure when he has time to build it all back up and into the car. Hoping it will be completed this month.

My old pistons have been returned as well which are perfectly useable. If I get £7k for them on ebay that will cover the cost of the rebuild! :ROFLMAO:

Are you going to whack the boost up, and run it in hard? [:D]

Oh definitely.............not!! Reminds me I should turn the MBC down a bit for a while. We don't need it peaking at 21psi in 5th whilst running it in!!

Stuart

You don't want high boost or even high RPM but you do want high load.. A heavy foot for both on and off the throttle is required when the engine is fresh to get those rings bed in as quick as possible, this is very important. You want mineral oil for this stage too, no synthetic, you can use running in oil but to be honest, some good old dinosaur oil is good enough. Also regular oil changes, a few hundred miles, not thousands to clear out any small particles leftover from the rebuild.

Pete

[h5]You don't want high load at low revs. And you should increase the boost gradually over the the first 1000 miles. Every factory engine has probably been run to highish revs from new. Manufacturers wouldn't do that if broke engines.[/h5]
