Transfer Box Issue

Thanks for that jbm. I will definitely be asking when I collect on Tuesday if my replacement is the new design!

I'm thinking of buying a diesel S with about 60k miles. What sort of cost is it if the tf box packs up? From what I have read this isn't necessarily a mileage issue, or is it? I live in the countryside so going through water, sometimes quite deep, is not uncommon.

Thanks if you can advise

Hi John

I had a Macan diesel for just over two years it had done approx 16000 miles transfer box went on mine. Luckily it was still under warranty so free!!however i think you will be looking at around the £2000.00 for a replacement if not a touch more maybe. Im sure if you rang Dealership they would give you an estimate.

Yes suspect mine needs replacing after 6 months ownership, 2016 GTS, 26,500 miles. Booked in for recall and transfer box issue on the 27th July.

I have a 2016 Cayenne S Diesel but no warranty. it has 43 k kms on it and i observe some juddering while turning sharply and very slowly. on high speeds, not sure or lurching (didnt see the rpm gauge) but it feels like thuds on very high acceleration from 50 - 100 kph. What i found out about this issue on other forums is that replacing TC oil solves the issue. Will try that in next few days and report with the outcome.

Another transfer box casualty. My 2017 Cayenne S Diesel is currently getting a replacement under warranty. Just 3 years old and only 23k miles. Does anyone know if it's just a straightforward replacement with same or is there an improved item that solves the problem so it doesn't recur.

If you have a Macan or Cayenne. which is out of warranty and displaying transfer case problems try the following fix, which worked for me on my 2013 Cayenne 4.2S Diesel. Purchase new transfer case fill and drain plugs from Porsche (about £40 for both which seems crazy for threaded plugs but they do come with Loctite on the threads)! Next, you need to purchase some good quality transfer case fluid. Do not get the Porsche fluid as my experience suggests this may not be up to scratch and contributes to the problems. The one I used is RAVENOL DTF-1 Transfer Fluid (TF-0870) from Ravenol Direct https://www.ravenol-direct.uk/ravenol-dtf-1-transfer-fluid-tf-0870.html It costs about £20 per litre at the time of writing. Mine took just over a litre until it was full so buy 2.

When I drained the old fluid out of mine at 79,000 miles after experiencing juddering from the transfer box, it was a thin in consistency and almost black in colour proving that it had degraded either through wear, moisture ingress or a combination of the two. When replacing the drain and fill plugs you must be very careful not to overtighten these as the transfer case is alloy and will crack if you overtighten! You will need a torque wrench and tighten to no more than 15ft /lb or 20Nm (don't get these the wrong way around)! Once you have replaced the fluid it is advisable to get the transfer case wear indicator reset (a Porsche Independent Specialist which has PIWIS will be able to do this for you).

If your car has air suspension put it in the highest setting and you should be able to crawl under without having to jack up the vehicle.

My Cayenne has now done nearly 20,000 miles since the transfer fluid change with no slipping or juddering from the transfer box.

I would suggest trying this possible fix first, before going to the considerable expense of a new transfer box.

I’ve seen that Porsche have extended the warranty on the transfer box in the US for 7 years. Is it the same in the UK?

so many cases, clearly a case of a defect ?

My friend has a Cayenne gts and had the usual symptoms with the transfer case.He phoned Porsche they changed the oil in the transfer case free of charge as it was part of a recall. He said it is much better now.

So may be worth speaking to the main dealer if you have symptoms to see what they can do. I have had quite a few Porsche cars and love the brand but like all Manufactures they have problems but what annoys me is these car journalists saying being a Porsche its bulit proof which is not the case.

I seem to have a similar problem on my 2016 Macan Diesel S with 22,000 miles. I get a jerky gear change for the first three shifts 1-4 when the engine has warmed up. I will try the Wilmslow OPC which is where I purchased the car and see what they suggest firs but I am inclined to try the oil change first rather than incur £2000 costs out of warranty.

Hi Mike I would speak to Porsche UK & argue that the Transfer box should NOT be faulty in that amount of time/mileage. It should be fit for purpose & ask them to perhaps pay for the part & yourself for the labour. They did for me on a out of warranty issue. Its well worth a phone call Mike

The Porsche Centre will carry out a diagnostic for £180. If it proves to be the transfer box they will refund this and fit a new box. Apparently this component has had an extended 7 year warranty applied. Lets hope that is the problem.

Our 66 plate 2.0 Macan has just started to display the dreaded transfer box symptoms, shuddering in 1st gear and reverse at very low speeds. The car is 18 months out of the 3 year warranty but could someone confirm that the 7 year tfr box warranty applies to UK cars.

car is booked in for diagnosis on 1st June as the local OPC are fully booked up. It’s a real pain as our second car is a 2 seater and the 4 of us are going to Scotland next weekend for a weeks hols. Hire car it is then

the car is now 4.5 years old with 37k miles and we have owned it since new.

Will keep you posted

I also have a 66 reg Macan Turbo but only covered approximately 8000 miles, also had from new! No symptoms yet but maybe too early. My brother has a 2014 model and had to have a TB replaced. Was hoping 2016 models had escaped the issue.......

Quick update on mine 66 plate Macan 2.0, 37k miles, out of the 3 year warranty 18 months ago The car started to show transfer box issue symptoms 2 weeks ago, booked in to Leicester OPC Tuesday this week and they called yesterday to confirm it is being fixed under warranty No issues and excellent service as usual, should get the car back next week but we are away on hols this week anyway so no issue Looks like transfer boxes are simply being sorted when presented to the the OPC. For reference, any decent Porsche indi will fix this for £1300 plus VAT if the OPC kicks up a stink

My Macan Turbo is also on a 66 plate however has only covered 8000 miles!

No signs of Transfer Box issues yet but wondering how long Porsche will extend the warranty on this common issue and failure?? Clearly I don’t cover that many miles so may not manifest the fault for some years......

I have a 67 diesel with 23,000 miles. It has started to feel extremely agricultural. Accelerating at slow speeds or reversing produces a series of thumps consistent with other descriptions of the transfer box issue. I bought it from a friend so no warranty. What is Porsche GB position with what is obviously a manufacturing fault ?

Sounds very much like the transfer box. Fortunately mine was still under warranty when changed but judging from other posts above it looks as though Porsche via an OPC will respond favourably - you'll only find out by taking it in.
