Transaxle Gathering at Cadwell Park, Sunday 30th June

Great pics - cadwell is a fantastic circuit What sort of lap times were you getting Gerry?

The best I got was 1'53 but Toms was a second quicker. I was loosing it braking too early for Coppice but I once saw two lads killed there in my Caterham days, and it's hard to overcome the baggage. It was our first outing in the 944 at Cadwell, so gearing was a learning curve. I was running into the rev limiter round Chris Curve in third, but tried snatching fourth, but that then forced a down-shift into the Gooseneck. The other problem I have is with second gear, i can't get it on down-shift, so I'm taking the mountain & hairpin in third. Tom can just about get second, younger elbows I guess. What's needed is new bushes on the gearbox top changer mech. need sorting maybe a trip to EMC is on the cards this winter. Gerry

Must get some trackday times in my 944.... I was dipping below 1. 50 in my Civic there - Cadwell really suits a small car, but lost time out of the slower corners without an LSD. (A mate of mine has a fastest lap of 1.41 in a 1.6 Civic racecar - that really flies!) I'm not sure how vital speed into Coppice is...not as vital as speed out of Charlies 2 anyway [:D] It's a scary corner, but a great buzz to fly into Coppice as fast as you can, go too fast in & you can miss the apex of Charlies 1, and if you get that wrong, I think you lose a lot of speed in the rest of that complex. I was using 3rd most of the day round mountain & hairpin recently, but it was a bit damp so i was being careful. In the dry it was definitely quicker in 2nd.. I sometimes struggle with selecting 2nd - I suspect it's got something to do with sloppy gearbox / engine mounts.

Thanks again Gerry for the chance to get in the 'thick of it!' We had a thoroughly good time. Your lap times weren't too far out from Tom's, I'm sure if you used second gear down from third you'd be showing him a thing or two! LOL [:D]

You're right smaller lighter cars can be much more aggressive with some of the direction and camber changes. The Caterhams were doing low 1'30's. In my Caterham days I used to get air over the mountain:

Here's a vid of me at Cadwell - trying to stay ahead of Pete in his Civic & getting a bit messy...I might have hit 1 or 2 apexes, but I'm definitely missing Charlies 1. Then following his dad in the same car, quite a lot of traffic, so I manage to stay with him for a few laps [:)] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vogs7WvbSRE

Like it! The rear facing vid is interesting. My Caterham was 400BHP per ton, the 944 is only 173 BHP per ton, makes a big difference on a circuit like Cadwell. No less fun though :)

My 944 is around 1250kg - the Civic was approx 950 and c175hp The weight certainly makes a difference & I don't feel quite so confident in the 944 there yet. I'd have liked to have tried the Civic there in its final iteration - with a closer ratio box + LSD. I think I would have shaved a fair bit of time off. I have a short vid of the same session where Pete was following me - shot from my car [link]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XzUJMNUsMc[/link]

How about another transaxle day out at Donington on w/e of 24/25 august. Modern Classics is on the Saturday and it should be my debut in the 924S!
