track day

I've never been on a track before in any car and I'm keen to enjoy my 911 with fellow porsche enthusiasts somewhere I can legally explore the handling of the car.

Is there anything regular or otherwise happening in the Yorkshire region for this?

I'm told croft is good and local enough for a good day out.

If nothing is sorted so far I'm happy to take it on if we've got enough interest?
 
I believe that Porsche club GB are looking to add a trackday at Croft (providing there is enough interest) at the back end of the year.

Book a Track are holding a day at croft on the 27th May. I have done a day with these guys before and was very impressed with the professionalism. I have put my name down for this date.
Fancy coming along?
 
Specialist Cars of Malton do a couple of track days each year at Croft and they are always superbly organised - not cheap but great lunch always included.
Bookatrack are also doing a day at Elvington airfield on Saturday 1st April - I think the cost is pretty reasonable at about £100.
I have done a couple of track days at Elvington - the good points are it's an airfield so running off the track and hitting anything is virtually impossible unless you can reach enough speed to lock the brakes for about 200 yards (although going off sideaways in to the grass and rolling is possible!). Downsides are it's quite hard wearing on tyres and it is of course not a track so they layout the route with cones - this works well enough but doesn't give it a lot of character. Finally Bookatrack are not a porsche organiser so you'll get all sorts of cars there and not many porsches. Then again, it's not that expensive.

I've been on the last two Specialist Cars Trackdays at Croft. As mentioned there very well organised, great lunch as well.

John also takes along quite a few of his toys for passenger laps. This years toys include: 996 GT2 RS Evo (650bhp), Minardi F1 car, 996 GT3 Cup car, Eurobrun Judd F3 car. He's looking at taking some, if not all of these and a few more.[:D]

And there's also the chance to drive other Porsche's that John takes, with an instructor sat in with you.

Well worth the money.

I was just starting to enjoy the passenger laps with you in that 964 RS, when the Marshalls Yellow flagged the whole course if you remember.

Book-a-track looks good Jacob, I'm gonna see when the next Specialist Cars event is (just sent my details on their site) and go from there - the date is good timing for me too on the book a track, do you know if there are many other PCGB members going?

Elvington sounds perfect for me Lee - plenty of run off! so have you done that one? ps - also what's your C2S like on the track - I've read so much about our wide body cars not being as good a drive as standard carrera's on normal roads but I must say I'm delighted with mine?

Thanks also Simon and Glyn - the specialist cars days seem to be universally recommended it's just a pity they don't advertise the calendar like book-a-track do?

btw Glyn she's a little dirty now but I've got all the little bits done and will do a quick wash on the weekend and get the photo's off to you - she looks superb.

Seems like you and I have done the same thing on the car front. I had a 2001 996 C4 and thought was great but a bit too much like a BMW only faster (ie more of a tourer). Last month I got the C2S and wow, what a difference! It feels like I own a sports car at last.

I have been around Elvington a couple of times - embarrasingly in a car I bought just for track days at the time - a Mark 1 MR2 T Bar - that was fun. But I have also passengered round in a Lotuse Elise and a Westfield with 200 bhp normally aspirated Cosworth engine - I think we spent 50% of the time sideways and that made me realsie what a good driver could actually do (and that I wasn't one).

Therefore sorry, but I haven't had the 'S' on the track yet. I am going to Elvington just to watch for a couple of hours in the morning and will track it later in the year.

Hi Kenny,

I'd suggest having a lesson first before you go on a trackday, you know brushing up on braking points, apex and exit points. It'll make your trackday experience even better. I'm driving out of the corners much faster since my lesson and you'll learn the finer points away from the prying eyes of others! Also you get to do other things with your car that you wouldn't normally do on the road. 150mph down the runway without a police car chasing you. Fantastic! I've put the website below. You discuss what you wanna do and go from there. I learnt so much about my car that day.

Sure Kenny, you can do it in your own car. It was mint. I wish I'd done it before Donington. Could have driven faster there. I went down to Elvington, just outside York, not too far from me. It's got a really long runway. Mega! If you can't get onto the website, I can give you contact numbers. You'll really enjoy the one to one.

How much do the Specialist Cars days cost?

I took mine to V.Max at Bruntingthorpe on Sunday and it performed better than I could ever have hoped for. At various points throughout the day and without being too specific, we ascertained that the speedo is 5% out at 150mph - on one occasion saw 160 on the clock - on another saw 148 on GPS - and another 143 through the lasers into a howling headwind (most of the normal 180-190+mph boys were turning in speeds at least 10mph slower) so I am a very happy bunny.

The handling is what has surprised me (and the seven other people I let drive it) the most. The back end is like superglue and it took a concerted effort to get the tail sliding at all (purely for fun you understand [:D] ) Also the brakes were spot on and in general the whole car felt planted and rock steady. All day it just kept going on and on and on ....

Would love to get some proper track tuiton even though the thought of being on a track with a load of other cars is quite daunting!

Here we are - voted by several people the prettiest car there on the day! [:)]

Kenny - have to agree with Lee... what a fantastic rear end your car has!

Can I ask, what made you originally go from a C4 to a C2? And as you have now gone back to a 4 do I assume correctly that you found it better?
 
Thanks boys - she is a beauty isn't she. I daren't take her out since Glyn waxed her.....scared that the zymol falls off or something! Since I've got all the little bits sorted and the detailing done I just sit and stare.... but then I remember there's pleasure to be had driving too!

Lee you should have an email from a photo share website - I've uploaded quite a few pictures on to there, not sure if there's a way of adding a few to pcgb forum? could add your email also Alasdair? - I basically want the world to see her beauty!

Alasdair will you be Elvington on the 1st? - would look forward to hearing your gorgeous carrera at full chat on the straight!

I know what you mean about daunting - not been on a track before and I can imagine me constantly looking in the rear view mirror to keep out of the way, anyway will see how it goes.

I do like how the 4's require less concentration in the wet but ultimately the purer the better for me so a 2 would be a preference. the 996 was a lovely car at the right price and it just so happened to be a 4. and i've been after a 993 S ever since really - if they did a 2S with turbo suspension and brakes that would be ideal.

See you Thursday Lee - I think I'll bring my camera, it's not every day you see a pastel yellow 993S sat alongside a grand prix white S - not in sunny Yorkshire anyway!

Hi Kenny,

Yeah, he uses Elvington. And, it was not as wearing on my tyres as I thought. There's a marked track there and most of it is quite smooth. The good thing about a 1-2-1 is that you do so many laps and then talk about how you can improve. On a track day, with a GT3RS up your chuff it's not that easy. By the end of the day, knackered, I was smooth into the corners and FAST out!
