Toyota GT 86

I said I liked the idea of it ages ago, but it was roundly rejected for not looking right. I still like it, and the Subaru version.

The Car test of the Subaru loved it, but it was in a group test with the cayman and 370Z so lost out all round. Had they compared it with a more similarly-priced alternative it might well have come out better. The only complaint seemed to be the lack of torque, meaning you have to keep the revs up high all the time to make any progress. A replacement 944S, then. [:)]

I like the idea of it too. It is very much a 944S in terms of spec - sub 1200 kg, 200 hp, only 151 lb ft of torque. I can't believe that after months and months and months and months of publicity and 'first drive' stories, no-one has yet been allowed to do proper performance testing on it, even the American magazines which normally all produce suspiciously rapid acceleration times that no Euro magazine ever matches!

I suspect that in a straight line it may be somewhat embarrassed by the diesel family hatchbacks of this world. But that is not the point of the car: it is intended for dancing, not sprinting.

I do think its a bit ugly, but can forgive it that. Would I buy one? No, because for me it's too small to me my daily-driver, and for a weekend and fun use I would prefer to spend £25K on one or more old cars. But if I were 28 and single again and could afford it, especially if I could get it as a company car, it would be very high on my list.

Not having £25K it's irrelevant to me, but as a £5K used car in a few years time it looks fun. I'm guessing the first thing most owners will do is fit bigger wheels, ruining the whole principle of the car, though.

I saw 2 out on track last week

First at the 'ring, on 888's - flew past us, with a very committed driver

Second at Spa - completely standard

Both were going very well - not slow at all.

Tiff Needell took the Subaru version round the Isle of Man TT course on this week's 5th Gear. Liked the handling but complained about lack of power and torque.
