thanks Oli and Eldavo . Trouble is I've only got a slot-in parking bay like you have at Tescos so i'm not sure I can do this myself if I'm going to stay on good terms with most of my neighbours []

I usually source the materials for my local indie to do the work but they moved recently. I'll have to find another local garage I can trust.

You're welcome round at East Stour to use the driveway/carport according to weather - I've done plenty more than discs in there (and I think the fresh air whilst sheltered from the weather is nicer to work in than most garages).

In terms of Indies, are you familiar with Tim at Marque 21? He is a strong supporter of Dorset Region, and many of our members can vouch for his workmanship and pricing. he is also plenty familiar with 944s, and I don't think too far from you?

thats a very good idea about the shelter /rent thing .[]

unfortunately there isn't even 6" to be had anywhere. [&o] we all have a private parking slot just wide enough to get a door open one side of the car and thats that !.

On the plus side at least I have 2x private car spaces but with neighbours with £million+ properties, diy on cars is strictly forbodden . I get dirty looks when i top up my oil and water [] they think classic cars are just old cars
Me and Mrs P are strictly regarded as the local rifraff here, especially when we recently bought a campervan ho ho ho [][][][]

What a sorry state of affairs ,Nick-most of the homes in my road are 500 to 600+K (inc mine) -we live a couple of mins from Steven Gerrards pad,several homes are over £1m & I happily look after our 3 running cars on the drive-most passers by & neighbours seem more irritated by the fact that they do not know how to do anything,whereas I do,than anything else & I tend to wear the scruffiest clothes for my DIY.[]

Fluid is passing the seals both ways, if you cant see fluid then the rear seal is stopping it leaking out

Vacuum line will soften pedal but it shouldnt go to the floor

mmm so what do you think is the problem ?

I was very surprised that i couldn't build up a little bit of pressure from furious pumping .?

Because of that I wondered if the brake master cylinder slide was getting stuck at the end of its travel and not returning for the next pedal stroke ?

+1 For the master cylinder, but check the vacumn line to the servo also

I am pretty sure that there is something screwy with the vacuum system because it makes this peculia noise when the brakes fail but I can't think how the vacuum system could give pefect braking one minute and complete failure the next!.?

There is no fluid loss or leaks anywhere

The M/c can leak into the servo however you stated earlier that you were not losing fluid

with neighbours with £million+ properties, diy on cars is strictly forbodden

I will just amplify what most have said Nick. If the servo failed it would remove vacuum assistance from the brakes but they would still work with extra effort required from you. the master cylinder can fail in such a way to allow fluid to leak past the seals and no fluid loss will be observed.
