Torque tube Vs Gearbox main bearing pinion!

Driving the car, gets to about 15-20mph and there is a whine from the rear of the car. Whilest moving if I take it out of gear and take my foot of the clutch the sound stays. It disappears again around the 15-20mph mark.

The car is meant to have 60K miles. The interior is immaculate, seats, dash is mint and uncracked, steering wheel is as new, everything is mechanically sound, doesnt leak etc leading me to believe the car is, as the history shows, low mileage.

Looking at the costs involved I hope to god that its the torque tube. I thought the gearboxes where ment to be pretty tough !

Any advise is appreciated.

My 944 makes a similar noise, If it was any thing to do with the gearbox you would be able to get a second hand box for resonable money and they are easy to change.

I've been driving the car a bit more now and the 'noise' is louder when you come off the accelerator.

If that helps make anyones prognosis any easier!?!
 
According to an article in 911 & Porsche world issue august 1999 the problem you describe is in the differential bearings, The way to check is from under the car, grasp the drive shaft and check for up and down movement - more than about 5mm of play is too much. I hope this is of help.
 
If you attempt to remove the driveshafts, beware that the circle bolts use 12 point spline tools, new bolts are cheap from main dealer.

Can anyone summarise the procedure for removeing the gear box once the drive shafts are off?
