Torque Tube Rebuild

I will soon be needing to get mine done. Doesn't look like it will be cheap, the process of having it removed and refitted or the refurbishing of it. It has 4 bearings inside it I think, Clarks website has a write up on it, exhaust needs to come off and transaxle dropped to get access to it. I get a rumbling sound from mine at idle, goes away when I dip the clutch and it's def not my clutch release bearing as it was done with clutch recently. It's worse after a spirited drive. What are the consequences of continuing to run with it like that? Just increased noise as time goes by or what likelihood of a failure, catastrophic or not? Cheers Stuart
 
I was thinking of getting a second hand Torque Tube and getting that refurbished and then fitting it. Removal and installation of the Torque Tube does sound like a lot of work but apparently is doable by a home mechanic. I have seen any information about total failure so not sure what would happen, but I have seen reports about the noise and also can reduce power due to the drive shaft having to work harder. There are places in the US that rebuild them so should be somewhere in the UK. Gavin

I haven't seen any info on this but I would expect damage to the bearing carriers if a bearing was to seize up. Also might end up with a bearing "welded" onto the driveshaft which might make the driveshaft unusable. I don't know if new bearing carriers are available as all the rebuild writeups I've seen reuse the old ones. That seems bad enough but I can't imagine anything else going wrong.

I have two tubes waiting to be oevrhauled, will remove shafts tomorrow with good ol' Subaru method [;)]
 
Olli, you make it look easy, silly question when putting the new bearings in how do you get them in the right spot that they need to seated
 
Gavin, usually there are clear shadow like markings in shaft where bearing used to be. So it is quite easy to measure the right spot.
 
A company in London refurbish them- i had one this year about £200 exchange i think called R.G.A.-google it. The torque tube is good but not prepared to supply carrier or deliver so i had to collect it and swap mine after removal.there are 2 different tubes one is slottted but later one isnt but they are compatible. Hope this helps. Ron
 
There are at least three different kind of tubes used with 944 models. Early tubes did not have "crash hooks". Early tubes also have two piece bearing carrier when new ones have one piece. 16V tubes are also slotted, about 50cm long slot in front of the tube. Basically 924 tubes are identical to early 944 ones, only shaft diametr is smaller.
 
Hi Gavin, Yes those are the people-do a good job and some great cars around the place.they were just very unhelpful about transporting tube but as i needed it i got my indie to take mine out and swapped them over on a saturday. Cheers Ron

I just read that thread. I must agree Jon's comment "Alarm bell". a bit over 200£ seems to be too low price. At least i doubt bearings are not the good ones. Original TT bearings factory used were C5 tolerance group. These are not any longer available. Closet ones are C4's. A set of these cost about 100 to 150€ depending what brand of bearings are used. C3 ones are about the half of that price. If TT is media blasted, powder coated and fitted fit good bearings, for 200£ there won't be any profit for seller. 500£ is a different story. Be sure rebuild TT contains good quality well known brand (SKF, Koyo FAG etc.) bearings. Chinese chap bearings will become expensive.
