Torque tube rebuild

My car has a squeek and I think it's getting worse. I suspect in not so many miles it will really start screaming. Occurs when off load and the shaft in the torque tube is spinning. So when sat in idle with the clutch up it squeeks but stops when you put the clutch in. Squeeks when rolling in gear with the clutch up or down but its only noticable when coasting. Ive been under the car and it sounds like its coming from the connection between the transaxle and the torque tube. My current thought is that its the no 4 bearing in the torque tube.

Anyone out there had this issue, fixed it themselves or paid to have it fixed? Doesn't look too hard to get the TT out but removing and re-fitting the bearings looks like it would be interesting. Sounds like its not uncommon on the turbos and when I was at Promax there was a turbo cab on the ramps having its TT re-built.
 
Hi it looks like you have answered your own question here if Andrew was rebuilding a Torque tube on a 944 while you were there it would be a good starting point to ask him about the cost and feasibility of a rebuild otherwise finding a replacement unit and changing it. I have found Promax to be very helpful in the past so would suggest you give them a call if they are local to you Wil
 
If its not your clutch release bearing (the other source of this noise) then there are specialists who will rebuilt the tt bearing for you for about £250 plus shipping. Removing the tt isnt that difficult just time consuming (apparently, ive never done it) perhaps if your clutch is going to need replacing soon you may take the opportunity to get the tt sorted at the same time, or vise versa... Its a bit harder than it looks to remove - gearbox out then lower the torsion bar this after removing the exhaust of course. I tried rebuilding one but gave up and bought a second hand one - havent come across anyone that rebuilds them. Rich
 
Rich is right - getting the TT out is 80% of the clutch change job. Not hard, but quite time-consuming. And if the clutch is showing any signs of wear, or has done more than about 80k miles, it's probably worth replacing that while you are in there (although the parts aren't cheap.) I think it's been said on here before that TT's are not in demand, so should be cheap from breakers. It would be a lottery to buy as the one you get may be as bad as the one you replace, but it would save a fair chunk of cash. You'd also then have a spare, which could be re-built and swapped back in if the second-hand replacement did turn out to be a duffer. Oli.
 
Copperman, do you mean rebuild the whole TT or just one bearing? Theres a guy on the rennlist forum who is making replacement heavy duty bearings for the 944 TT. It appears he had some success doing somthing similar for the 928. Might be worth a shot. They do look much much better than the originals, theres a comparison picture in there. Maybe buying an old torque tube, having it shot blasted painted and re-built ready to be swapped over would be the best option.
 
There is a detailed procedure on Clarks garage. I replaced the bearings in the torque tube of my S2 several years ago and it is the most tedious job I've ever done on these cars - but then perhaps the tools I used were too simple. Still if I were to do it again I would have someone rebuild it for me. Replacing a turbo is a piece of cake compared to replacing torque tube bearings, which I found to be a major pain in the back.
 
I made a bracket holding two 2m threaded bars to keep the main threaded bar in line with the tube and pulled the bearings one by one. Bearing carriers were so strongly tightened into the tube there was no way of pulling them all four together, one by one was a nightmare already and I twisted the threaded bars several times. If you search for member "Vilhuer" on the Rennlist 928 forum you should find pictures of the set up.
 
He just rebuilds the bearings as far as I know, however you send the whole TT off and he sends it back with new bearings fitted. They are based in south London IIR, not sure of their contact details. Patrick at Porschembri knows the guy... Edd
