Tiptronic Losing Drive

Hi All,

I have an issue with the Tiptronic Gearbox in my 996.2 Turbo X50 (51,000 miles). I'm wondering if anyone can help work out what's wrong.

In recent months I noticed an occasional jolt from the car when driving in normal traffic. I couldn't pin down what the circumstances were that caused it.

Today I was on a longer journey, travelling at around 30 to 40 mph in traffic on an A-road when the car suddenly lost drive and the revs went sky high. It was as if the car suddenly went into Neutral. I was preparing to pull over when everything went back to normal. Having driven 100 very careful miles home, it hasn't happened again.

I now think both problems are linked and the problem is getting worse.

I would be very grateful for any ideas as to what may be wrong and what I should do next. I know it's a Mercedes gearbox, should I go to a good Indi or would a gearbox specialist be better?

Thanks

David

Hi David,

It might be worthwhile contacting both a reputable Porsche Independent and an auto transmission specialist for advice on this since it could either be just an electronic glitch or a mechanical issue. I doubt that the Porsche Independent would carry out any mechanical repairs themselves and probably they would farm out the work to a specialist, but they should be able to identify any electronic faults via their diagnostic system.

Here’s an auto transmission specialist who may be able to help:

Either way I hope you get a satisfactory solution to your problem.

Thanks Jeff - Let's hope it's something simple

Indeed David.

I have to say that with the intermittent nature of the problem it does appear more likely to be electrical related, a bad connection somewhere - the gear selector maybe? Hopefully it’s just a case of breaking and remaking a connector.🤞
