Time to say goodbye to my fabulous GT4

I don't think it'll be a break, I think it'll be a permanent split to be brutally honest! Nothing at all to do with the Cayman section, which is absolutely fabulous, but everything to do with the future direction the Club is heading in. Thanks also for the kind words though, it's much appreciated.

My GT4 is pretty distinctive, so if anyone sees me knocking about anywhere in the future feel free to come up say hello [:D]

Hi Dave,

I understand your reasons and the current direction we seem to be going is difficult to reason particularly when taking into account the financial history we found ourselves in a few years ago. I trust you will still be around on Pistonheads ? Sorry to see you leave and you will be missed.

Geoff

Thanks Geoff. I'm using PistonHeads less and less these days too, but still pop in from time to time so I'll see you over there I guess! [:)]

Well after what seems like forever since my fabulous GT4 was sold, my GT3 has at last arrived at my local dealers in Wilmslow and having seen it briefly, I’m over the moon with it, I can’t wait to go and collect it next Friday. It’s going to be a long week until then and I just hope that I like it as much as my incredible GT4... 🤞

Looks amazing. I sold my GT3 though as I thought it was just too much car for the road. Win win with these though as you make ALOT of money if you want to move back to a slower car. the overs are mental, so Porsche pay you to run it for 2 years. I am done with daft fast cars, in the UK they seem pointless. I sold my 3 fastest cars !! but to try these for free is a no brainer and very exciting.

Hi Martin!

I've just been allocated a slot for a GT4, so first thing to do was search the forums for other owners and opinions on it.

I've just watched the video of your GT4 and I'm extremely excited for the arrival of mine. I currently own a 718 Cayman S (manual) however, think I'll be going for a PDK on my GT4, from owning your GT4 what was driving manual like and would you have preferred an automatic after purchase?

I've just seen the pictures of your GT3, looks incredible, hopefully you'll have some videos posted for it.

Thanks,

-Stone.

Hi -Stone,

Thank you for your comments and congratulations on getting a GT4 allocation, you are in for a treat. My GT4 is without a doubt the best car that I have owned to date, the forthcoming GT3 has a lot to live up to.

In terms of the transmission options, this is a difficult one. I absolutely loved the manual gearbox in my GT4, it was so precise to use and comes with the option of the Rev match button to assist you. I found that it was quite addictive and probably encouraged me to change gear sometimes, just for the hell of it.

However, I quickly realised that if I tried to enjoy my GT4 to its full potential on the public roads, I’d soon lose my license and so decided to give the club’s track days a try, to explore both my capabilities and the cars in a safer environment.

I have really enjoyed these and soon found that for a track novice like me, there is enough to think about when trying to improve my driving skills, such as where the car needs to be on the track, braking zones, other drivers, etc, let alone getting the gears right too.

It is with this in mind that I have personally opted for a PDK car this time and it will be better at changing gear than I will ever be, what is more I can always select the manual option and use the paddles when I want to.

That said, if I wasn’t going to do track days and my car was just for Sunday’s and fun days, then I probably would have gone with the manual option.

In terms of the other options, if I were ordering a GT4 again, I would still want the club sport pack and bucket seats, I would also add the LED headlights, the Bose stereo and Racetex sun visors over and above my spec. Otherwise, just go with what you want, you can’t really go wrong, they are fabulous cars. When is your car due to arrive?

Enjoy speccing your GT4 and please share your journey with your new car on the forum. In my personal experience, the Cayman section of the forum is one of the best and most active. There are some great people on here who will be happy to help and give advice as and when required.

Cheers,

Martin

Thank you Mr Demon.

As this car isn’t going to be my daily driver, I feel sure that I can be sensible enough to resist the temptation to try and drive the car to its full potential on the public roads, I think that it should be fine for Sunday and fun day use, but will find out for myself soon enough and very much hope that I don’t decide that I have to follow your decision and sell my ultimate dream car because of its potential.

As with my GT4, I intend to use the car on club track days to help me to continue to improve my track confidence and driving skills (I’ve still got a lot of learning to do in this regard and expect to see lots of Cayman’s coming past me on the PCGB track days).

If the car appreciates in value, I see that as a bonus, it is not the reason that I have bought the car, this is genuinely my dream car and I do feel both extremely lucky and privileged that my local dealer allowed a GT3 allocation to go to a local enthusiast and massive fan of the brand.

Hi Martin,

Sorry to hear that you’re leaving us having enjoyed your GT4 experience - it seems like only yesterday when you joined us asking about options, insurance, etc.! 😀 - but understandable now that you’ve managed to secure your dream car, which looks great in Shark Blue BTW (my colour of choice too!). I think you’re going to find it a bit quieter over on the GT3 forum, but you’re always welcome to pop back here for a chat and we’d be interested to hear how the two GT cars compare.

Hope the handover goes smoothly on Friday … I’m sure that the GT3 won’t disappoint! [;)]

Jeff

Hi Martin. Sorry to lose you from the Cayman fraternity, but looking at the pictures of your new car I can't bring myself to say you should have stuck with the old one! How fortunate to be able to try both, but perhaps we will see you back some time in the future.

Enjoy the GT3 and don't hesitate to come on here with your comparisons.

Best wishes.

Thank you for your kind comments Jeff and also for all of your help and advice, it really has been very much appreciated.

If its okay with everyone here, I’ll continue to follow the Cayman register forum and will share my views of the GT3 compared to my GT4 in due course, I for one certainly preferred my GT4 to my 992 C2S, it really was so much more engaging so I hope that my dream car lives up to my expectation, we’ll have to wait and see.

Yours,

Martin

Hi John,

Thank you for your message and to you and all of the Cayman Register Members for making me so welcome over the last eighteen months or so. As I have just said to Jeff, I’ll keep in touch with the Cayman forum, you never know I might do a Ralph and come back at some point in the future.

The friendly spirit, help, assistance and banter that is shared on this forum and within your Register is what Porsche Club GB life should be about.

And don’t worry, I’ll move over at the club track days to let all of you super fast Cayman drivers pass me...

Thanks again,

Martin
