Thinking of Running Slicks?

Been upto Silverline, Warwick to buy some new tyres and discovered the following.

Pirelli P Zero 245/620-17's no longer available.

225/620-17's ARE available at 125 + VAT per tyre. Plenty of these as standard fit on Scoobies. And were also standard fit during the Porsche Carrera Cup in the UK

A few 265/640-17's are left at a special price of 89 + VAT.

These are standard fit for RS's and will go straight on to Cup 1 wheels.

They passed comment on the Michelin Sports Cup tyre that the feedback that they are getting is that they do not stand upto the heat generated and that Pirelli Corsa's last longer and take more heat.

Mel is this an old wives tale or what:

Running slicks can put extra strain on the engine and drive train which can cause long term damage and excessive wear?[8|]

Mel,

Took my Corsa's off today so I can take them to Silverline to transport them to Spa.

After 4 trackdays (Combe, Bedford and Goodwood twice) Left hand tyre looking fairly sh----d so I think I'll need new tyres during the 2 days at Spa.

As an ex karter (momentum is everything) my driving style loads up the tyres well but I'm never sideways.

Can any one suggest how that would compare with Cup Sports?

Also checked the pads, less than 5mm on the fronts and around 7mm on the rears, I'll check with AFN on Tuesday bot I assume I'd better get new front pads fitted before attempting 350-400 miles round Spa

Regards.

Sadly in the Boxster and 996 manual this seems to be indicated.
It seems the "Semi-dry sump" in these engines is not as good as a proper dry sump in the air cooled models...[&o]

My car was built for slicks........[:D]

Speak to BMTR they often have cheap Avon slicks(£80) use a softer compound on front a few degrees more camber and have fun.The increased front end grip gives more confidence and nothing but a GT3 cup will come close, sure it stresses the car a bit and eats brakes, but hey RS is a fun car not a collectors item,as I see seems to be happening.Talk of buying a cup or RS for lnvestment is worrying new trend, with owners debating wether or not to risk their investments on track, buy a speedster for the garage,RS FOR THE TRACK...

Hunter -keep up the good work. RS's are for DRIVING!!!

Maurice -the way you carry on you'll get me a reputation for being tight!! [:D]

Yep, bought four new Pirelli slicks last week........and one new S02 a few weeks ago.............couldn't find anybody to break the slicks in this time......

Des, no its not an old wives tale. The more grip you generate the more forces you subject the chassis / drive train to.

I wouldn't say so much for the engine, but suspension components, brakes and transmission will all work harder. Nothing to be alarmed at though it just means the maintenance schedule should change accordingly.

I did run a bearing at Donington last year, and the rear engine mounting has a crack......

That's why I have the wheels off before every track day and give it a good going over......have even been known to wash the inside of the wheel arches and touch up the paint......

Not in my experience. I have run both the Corsa and the Cup with my RS and
noted that the Cup have a slightly better grip (on dry tarmac), last longer and
take more heat. I run -2.5 deg of camber all round.

Ok wise guys...I have a spare set of unshod 17" RS Mags, which slicks and sizes can I get please.[8|]

See above miene KleineuntengruppenRSenfuhrer.

But since u can't be bothered........225/620-17's-F 265/640-17's-R

Whilst on the subject. this is my theory (i would welcome your views)
good quality Road tyres (i.e. p zero 's) offer good road and excellent wet weather performance, grip levels for track work not high but acceptable with very progressive breakaway. Suspension friendly.

track day tyres (i.e. Pirrelli Corsa or Mich Sport cups) not as good in the wet but acceptable. very good grip on track, similar though less progressive breakaway but at a higher level of ultimate grip. Harsher on suspension components. Better track day dry weather performance at the expense of ultimate wet weather/ road use grip.

Slicks. very poor in the wet (understatement!) exceptional high levels of dry grip with narrower working range and breakaway. Higher forces generated therefore higher wear rates should be expected for suspension components.

My own personal opinion is that running slicks will definately increase your cars ultimate speed and ability to get round corners. But it will decrease (if driven to the cars/tyres limits) your margin for error, as slicks have very high but very finate limits. Think very carefully what you are trying to achieve and want before making a purchase. The road tyres offer the best all round perfomance but are a compromise on track. The track day tyres are the opposite and offer good performance on track at the expense of road manners and are great for trailered cars or dry days. The slicks are for those with two sets of tyres and or a trailer and you should possess the abilty to explore the cars handling with a level of skill to understand the car/tyre behaviour at it's very limit's.
