The wait is over

Update. The unit has to be returned to the states for repair (bad news) but Rick has been on the phone and made me feel much better that there wont be any problem setting up again when it arrives back[:)]. Overall I suppose its not 'that' bad but I'm afraid there wont be any pics of my finished car till Christmas as I wont be seeing it again till then.

Haha its typical of my life really, I have my dream car for four days and then it ends up off the road for 6months! Still, life is long.. and as its now has a fresh paint job and has been fully sealed inside all of the sills where it could rust, there'll be plenty of time to enjoy it in years to come[:)][8D]
 
Its mainly the money needed to make the journey while I'm a poor student but I'm coming down near you, Plymouth. I'll have to pop in to a local meet after christmas when I'm hopeing to bring the car down:)
 
Sorry to hear that.
Now you just have to find a volunteer who will drive the car during your absence, we all know leaving our cars standing still can cause many issues.. [;)]
 
You jest but I've seriously been considering the idea of renting it out somehow for someone to use as their car while I'm at uni on maybe an, I'll service it but driver insures and you crash it you pay scheme.

I'm confident enough in the cars strength that it would take the wear and tear of being driven hard and I'd much rather it were used as a grand tourer and gained thousands of miles on the clock than that it was sat in a garage getting rusty, I just worry about the scenario of a big crash. Parts could be transferred/replaced but buying a suitable donor car, swapping the parts over and getting it to the same condition would cost way more than any insurance company would pay for.

It's the only thing that puts me off. Well that and the fact I'd have to find the money to do the turbo swap and clutch before it got lent out.
 
I have to ask (sorry) but you've bought WUF, done all this work but picking it back up is too expensive? I get that you're a poor student but then the car seems a complete dichotomy.

Tell me to mind my own business if you like, just seemed a bit odd 'tis all.

Its ok. I've been a working man but I've given up my job and I'm going back to uni now as a mature student. Had a lump of money with which I bought WUF (still gone a little over budget as you always do) but in a weeks time I've got to adapt to a new lifestyle and live off the governments student living allowance or with no job to support me, money will disappear pretty fast! Hence doing the 9hour round trip which would probably cost about £200 wont be feasible unless I want to busk for my lunch[;)] its a frame of mind I need to get into.

Things will hopefully improve next year as I plan to get myself a flat down there once I know the area better and that will greatly reduce my living costs.. meaning I will hopefully be able to use WUF a bit more.

Would love to be that guy, but it took a few more years of wasting money on cars before I got this lucky [;)]

Hmmm pics??.. ok here's a pic of engine bay, shows changes to fuel system and air intake for those who have seen the car before.


Fuel system now has new race spec fuel pressure regulator( old one couldn't cope anymore with new pump) new pressure gauge, damper has been removed , this was more for safety than anything else as the connecting hose was very brittle and I was woried about a possible fire.

Air intake is the biggest I could find by Pipercross, I had to remove tha MAF from the throttle intake and position it in the cooler hard pipes just so I could get the bonnet closed. After a lot of fiddling and various pipe configurations I arrived at what you can see in the pic.

Dump valve has also been changed to an atmoshpere type , Porsche's position for the recirculating dump valve is not in the best place and can cause a flat spot in the power curve. I used to get this low down in the curve but since changing to current setup the flat spot has gone. BTW this was not me being clever, it was pointed out to me many years ago by the guy who maps my car as a bad place for the valve to be..


well that's some of the latest changes.. now I need to fit the split rear folding seats that I've just been and picked up... happy days...:):)

Hi Pete,

I'm just about to fabricate a new 4" - 3" inlet and I'm also looking at the Pipercross as you have as I don't think that I like the hissing sound of an open cone filter. I don't have the MAF to fit in so it may be a little easier for me!

Anyway, I'm looking at the best way to handle the dump valve - I want to keep it as recirculating but I don't understand your comment re the original placement being bad. Do you have any other details that you can explain?

So far as I'm aware the only problem with the original location is if you have a MAF because the turbulence from the air released causes the MAF sensor to momentarily misread. If you have a MAP sensor in the manifold instead then there should not be any problem.
