the ultimate question I no longer have to face

ORIGINAL: Frenchy Well done Nick, Nothing major, measure your front discs i may have a set in good order for a minimal fee if they are the same and will fit.
thanks that could be useful. I'm not sure yet if they are MO80 or non MO80 discs I'll have to measure them up. Its only one disk which is rusty, where the caliper pots were seized.

ORIGINAL: zcacogp Nick, Superb news! There's life in the old gal yet! I don't understand tho' - how do these statements match up:
ORIGINAL: peanut ok the car failed the MOT but only on 5x minor items. 5 o/s front brake pad less than 1.5mm thick (new pads ) ... Garages cannot fail a car on rusty or over thin brake discs any more. providing the braking efficiency is to an acceptable level the discs can be rusty, thin, cracked ,glazed !
Surely they can't fail it if the brake pads are too thin? They never used to be able to. Or was it low on braking efficiency, and they suspect it's 'cos the pads were thin? Either way, it's academic - you need to change them. Great news. I'm chuffed for you. Oli.
thanks Oli . Its the pad that is too thin its apparently only 1.5mm thick ! [:D] Hopefully I should have a couple of old part worn pads that will do to put it through a quick retest. it seems as though lots of MOT rules have changed recently.

ORIGINAL: Fat Albert Great News!
thanks FA..[;)] I'm making lists of jobs to do and one of the first is a good valet. She's covered in dead leaves and green algae [&o]

Indeed they have. For instance as of this year an engine management light on is an instant fail regardless of emissions results. As for ABS and airbag lights.

blimey ! when i first turned mine on today I had more warning lights than NASA [:(] ABS, Oil, brake pad, ........... thank god the examiner didn't notice anything. Talking about emissions the CO level was 3.08 CO2 level 13.01 HC level 210 and o2 level 0.39 lambda 0.923 how does that compare with other S2's

Also now you can't have hid bulbs without having headlight washer and adjuster. Also lens must me plian without a patern on it.

Nick, CO and HC are the only ones that have defined ranges for cars before 1990-something. The limits are CO<3.5 and HC<1200. Mine, from the last MOT: CO - 3.38 HC - 185 And the one before: CO - 3.25 HC - 184 Yours looks fine - certainly nothing to worry about. Oli.

I haven't got an MOT- ology qualification but there are many anomalies-like you can get an"advisory" re' a faulty or failing propshaft but as it's not part of the MOT.you can't get failed on that.

IIRC your car doesn't have to be drivable to pass an MOT - or never used to be. I know someone who took their Mk4 Spitfire in for an MOT which had a clutch so badly worn it wouldn't drive at all. They pushed it onto the ramps, and pushed it onto the brake test machine. It passed .... (This was about five years ago or so - so after several rounds of MOT-tightening.) Oli.
