the ultimate question I no longer have to face

I havent tried to do them myself, although if you have to pay someone else then itll probably not be cost effective. Im spot-on about ze German wasserpumpe though! [:D]

As in my PM Nick, I have a pair of OEM front disks and Pagid pads available if you want. ECP do belts and tesnioners for about £160 for everything. i would just use a secondhand master cylinder as the only place the leak from is the 2 rubber grommets that hold the reservoir on, these are available from OPC for not much money. Never seen a dff mastercylinder yet. Ebay waterpumps! Nick after nearly 2,300 posts on this forum I knew that you could not let your baby go that easily ! Good decision to keep her I think . For what its worth I have very similar thoughts every year when I put the s2 to bed for the winter but after six years of ownership I realise that the money I would recuperate by selling would never replace the feeling I get when its time to tax and drive her again . best of luck Dave D

Wise decision to spend the money and keep the car. For what it's worth, I had the jobs on your list done on my car earlier this year, and the bill for that part of the job came to about £2K. That was using Porsche parts, fitted by an independent Porsche specialist. I don't have the time, tools, skill or inclination to do any spanner work myself. Some of us have to do our bit to keep the professional mechanics in clover[;)]

I love the car. I love the looks the cream interior the beautiful shimmering Dove blue paintwork . I love the speed and handling and it always gives puts a smile on my chops when I drive it. Its unlikely I could find a replacement in this colour with cream interior and adjustable suspension and chipped with such an excellent engine Say no more !

Peanut Apologies for the late reply - only just read the post. I would agree very strongly with all (Zacgop in particular) regarding hanging onto the car. Brakes and clutch cylinders should be a pretty straightforward DIY - happy to provide e-mail and/or phone assistance by way of support if required ? Regarding the cost of various items - unless prices have shot up recently, S2 front discs shouldn't be more than ~ £150 = smaller 220 Turbo items. I paid ~ £200 about a year ago for Brembo 250 Turbo discs ! Are you sure the price for the Master cylinder is also correct ? ISTR the turbo master brake cylinder was about £200 ? Best to shop around: Berlyn Services GSF/ Eurocarparts Porschepart OPC E-bay etc It'll probably be easier to by the cheapest parts from individual suppliers rather than everything at once. Good luck, keep us posted and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it on the DIY ! Chris - 07540 193874 chrisgrahame@yahoo.co.uk

ORIGINAL: peanut Any suggestions for the following parts would be a big help. These are the prices I got from Porsche but to be honest I would be quite happy to use aftermarket parts where possible to keep the cost down. 1989 944 S2 Brake master cylinder  £411 Clutch master cylinder    £98.00 Clutch Slave cylinder      £98.00 clutch slave hose             Front brake discs            £228.00 front brake pads              £118.00 front brake hoses             £47.00 waterpump                     £272.00 belts & tensioners             £200.00
Nick, Those prices look very high. Suggestions include: Brake Master Cylinder - dunno, but they must be available for less than that. Brakes - these people: http://www.brakeparts.co.uk/ - list front pads for an S2 as being £24.22p, and 'Bremtech' disks as being £83.89p each. VAT and P&P will be on top of this, but I'm sure you will have change from £250 for the lot. (I've used these people before and had a good experience with them.) They also list clutch master and slave cylinders for £89 and £79 respectively. Brake hoses are probably about right, and well worth shopping around for. Belts and tensioners were cheapest from promax when I last looked, and they are listing them for £178.68p (again excl. VAT and P&P). They may be cheaper elsewhere if you hunt around. Waterpump was less than £200 this time last year - from German eBay, and this included delivery and currency exchange costs (from the same person as is selling the part that Alasdair linked to. It may be worth asking her - because it is a her - what prices she can offer on other parts. You've made the best decision, and I'm sure it will be cheaper than you are currently thinking to get the ol' gal back on the road ... Oli. I was surprised to find that Porscheshop were the cheapest for master and slave clutch cylinders (and flexi pipe). Add in the 5% PCGB discount and I was very happy indeed.

thanks eddie thats great !...I've currently got a saggy squab .... which has nothing to do with my weight (18st) I shall be getting in touch some time soon but I need to get the mechanicals sorted first and the car back on the road.

thats what I have found too . They seem to be the only company that can supply the clutch master and slave cylinders too. I shall give Bert a ring and see what he is able to supply. I cannot make head nor tail of his site to be honest [:(]? I need to source and buy all of the parts before I can book the car into the garage and its proving a bit of a nightmare.

I don't think you are the only one ... [&:] The links I posted above should help you out. Oli.

thanks Oli. I've found a few more but most suppliers are a bit deceptive about the VAT [] it makes a huge difference

I used Bert for my S2 front discs and pads, think these are the right links, still keenly priced too... wow I've just re-read all the replies to this thread and I'm completely overwhelmed by how many of you have offered your help advice and support and encouragement. Thank you each and every one of you it is really appreciated. I've never really considered parting with my 944 but the current situation did seem a tad daunting I must admit. The list of work seems to grow every time I think about it. Your encouragement has allowed me to see it more as a rolling program of work rather than a huge restoration . I've booked her in for an MOT tomorrow just to see the full picture. I know the examiner well so he'll allow me to have a good look underneath so I can make a complete assessment. I'll let you know how I get on tomorrow.

brilliant news! ok the car failed the MOT but only on 5x minor items. 1. horn u/s (poor earth) 2 o/s driving lamp. (needs a bulb) 3. os front brake binding (clean caliper ) 4. o/s wiper not working (drive arm dropped off ) 5 o/s front brake pad less than 1.5mm thick (new pads ) Apparently a lot of changes in the MOT recently. Garages cannot fail a car on rusty or over thin brake discs any more. providing the braking efficiency is to an acceptable level the discs can be rusty, thin, cracked ,glazed ! So technically I do not have to replace any of the brake discs or the brake/clutch master cylinders . I'll do the failed bits and bobs tomorrow and get the MOT and re-tax her. I'll get the garage to replace the brake and clutch fluids immediately and then later in the spring I'll book her in for belts pump tensioners etc. I'll put some nice new brake discs on myself. I'm really chuffed about this tonight and like a kid with a new car. Thank you everyone who encouraged me to keep the old girl.

Well done Nick, Nothing major, measure your front discs i may have a set in good order for a minimal fee if they are the same and will fit.

Nick, Superb news! There's life in the old gal yet! I don't understand tho' - how do these statements match up:

Surely they can't fail it if the brake pads are too thin? They never used to be able to. Or was it low on braking efficiency, and they suspect it's 'cos the pads were thin? Either way, it's academic - you need to change them. Great news. I'm chuffed for you. Oli.
