The Saga Continues

Well having ordered a pair of used 993 mirrors from a reputable (or perhaps not) supplier (obviously I can't mention the name), it turns out that these might be stolen. I cant believe I am trying to replace my stolen mirrors with some 'hot gear'

Well what to do now? I guess some of you may be saying I should have bought direct from Porsche to avoid fuelling this black market, however, at a cost of £550 (not painted) for a pair of mirrors, who can blame me. Its a shame those clever people from Stuttgart can't re-think their pricing strategy to help deter toe rags from stealing bits off our cars but then why would they cut profits eh!

I would be extremely interested to know which part suppliers other than Porsche direct you have experience with, good or bad and what views you have on companies that supply cheaper parts than Porsche directly?

Oh and the obvious question - return the goods and demand a refund and/or report to the police?? Obviously I have to prove they are stolen!!

Contact the firm and ask why the wires are cut - there may be a perfectly reasonable explanation, although I'm at a loss to come up with one. It is a shame that our moderators don't allow names here as I'ld hate to think that I could be buying a used part that had been half inched form someone elses pride and joy.

If you report it to the police they'll probably take them away and you'll have to buy another pair [:(] [:(]

This all seems a bit odd--what was the packaging like? Their condition other than the wires?

I agree with Clyde--if you're not happy with them, invoke your statutory consumer rights and return them to the supplier. You don't even have to justify yourself. I'm sure the supplier reads these forums and will get the picture. Supporting a market for questionable mirrors probably just means mine'll get nicked next!

Net result .................he still has no mirrors

One of the main problems is the demand for these mirrors from owners of 944's etc and indeed Audi's and VW, so there is always going to a market for them unless the owners of other marques find a better looking mirror and fuel the steal to order market with their desire for those

Naming and shaming is a no no. It is far too sensitive an issue that has legal ramifiications and has been discussed many times previously on this forum and elswhere (eg. PHs).

What makes you think they are stolen?

The wiring has been cut

In 1990 I had occasion to take off the passenger door mirror on my then 4 year old 944 and found exactly the same. Before my ownership, the door had been painted and the mirror wiring loom had been cut to get the mirror off . It had been done at a Porsche Approved body shop too!! They had in line soldered it and heat shrinked the joints to a good standard so it did not bother me at all.

I wouldn't worry about it. Get them painted, fitted and enjoy.

there is of course one hope to cling on to if you are unlucky enough for this to happen to you, and that is when you source used replacements you could be really fortunate and buy back your own mirrors, so saving on painting costs[:-]

More reasonable pricing of new mirrors would surely help to stop this problem, given they are so easily stolen, so come on Porsche. (Though I know it's probably not the most important thing on your mind.)

Post the colour of the mirrors. The number of 993s written off do not equal the number of mirrors available on the second hand market. There ought to be a database; that way when these things are posted the police can do a colour match with the reported owners missing mirrors and make these things too hot to sell on. Might help? Porsche sell these things in bits and then they have to be put together. All the working parts are on the inside...
