The restoration begins!

My car goes in today for the (finally authorised at last) accident repair from September. They've agreed a new wing, and associated paint.

Whilst it's in the bodyshop, it's going to have the rusty areas replaced, and essentially a full respray. As a regularly-used car that lives outside it's got scratches, chips and dinks on every surface, along with the usual small patches of rust in the areas like the hatch pins and spare wheel well, that mean there's really no convnient point to stop painting!

The worst bits are, of course:

The OS front wing

The NS front wing. This had been recently repaired when I bought it, but the rust came through within months. Why they never treated it after repairing it I don't know! [:'(]

The OS sill, looks pretty OK from inside but not nice from the outside.

NS sill is the same.

OS rear arch is terrible. It was this side that needed welding for the MOT as well, so strangely it's the wrong side that's suffered more. Normally it seems to be the NS that picks up all the muck from th side of the road over the years.

What's surprising is that this car was very good four years ago, apart from the small repair to the NS wing that was the only rust visible. The sills were fine inside, and waxoyled, so hopefully they aren't going to be a nightmare underneath. It does show how fast rust progresses on a car that lives outside, and gets used all year round. Blimey Paul that took a while to get authorised, glad it's getting sorted for you now though. How long do you expect to be without her?

Looking forward to the finished results, she'll look like new! [8D]

Fare play to you Paul... ! Getting the bodywork authorised after all the mechanical work that was already done this year... Mechanical or bodywork its one or the other every year... You have to keep on top of both.. You cant afford to let them slip !

Its a good desicion to get it sorted out now - Once rust gets in to a car its a rapid decline. My hatch pins need to get sorted out before next season. My car is now asleep for the winter in the father-in-laws turf shed...

I cant believe you have the S2 for 4 years - Where did they go....? It was July '08 when my avatar picture was taken...

Today it's had all the surface ground back to see what's underneath, and it's not actually too bad! All the rot will be cut out, but not nearly as much as I had expected. Mine looks like one car where the rust really was worse on the surface. [:)]

The worse front wing largely turned out to be blown stone guard paint, although it'll all be replaced anyway

The other wing is also not too bad, at least in that the rot is confined to the lowest part. The NS sill really isn't bad, again it'll be cut out to get to the inner, but that seems fine.

The OS sill is another matter entirely; this is the one that was repaired for the MOT. The £350 cost bought me a piece of 10mm square steel welded into the sill, with a flat plate underneath it. There was masses of filler, in fact the opinion was that doing it properly would have taken less time than all that filling and sanding. []

Closer up, there's been no effort to even spray a bit of waxoyl in to the sill whilst they were in there, hardly the "proper job, we don't want it spreading" I paid for. Not a happy bunny, and I will be having words!

All in all, a very good start to the project and it really looks as if it might be costing a lot less than the worst-case estimate. Fingers crossed!

Hi Paul looks ok. Has the car been repaired before ? it's just that the photo looks like there has been a couple of plates welded in that have rotted away. You can see a few welds along the bottom and a lot of what looks like filler and stone chip on top.

Good start. At the end of the day, it's 'just metal' - and you'll have a HUGE degree of satisfaction knowing that your car has been repaired by you in the manner you want. Keep the pictures coming......

Its going to look great when its done Paul, its a great feeling knowing you have it sorted and wont have to worry about it for a while. Good to see another car being restored so it can carry on being used. Who is doing the work for you?

Edd

Oli, I will be taking a can of beans and luxury pork sausages away with me for Christmas. Whether that will placate SWMBO, I don't know, but it was she who pointed out to me that the 944 was looking a bit tatty around the edges.

Edd, it's being done by a local classic car nut. He did advertise through Chiltern region, and has done some great work on member's cars, but he's more than fully booked and currently re-fitting the workshop and taking on more staff. Last week he had a new oven-thing fitted, guess who's first in line? [8D] I did offer to give him the publicity, with no expectation of any sort of deal, but he's so snowed under with cars waiting to be restored there's no way he wants more work. A nice place to be, and I'm sure anyone who googles "classic car bodyshops near High Wycombe" could find him.

Looks like a great first days progress from him [:)] after all these months of delay by the insurance []

You should have it back by Christmas then [;)]

Hi Paul, glad it is underway after all this time! Look forward to seeing it all shiney at Rutland.

PS. I would stretch to can of beans and a can of hotdog sausages soooo much better!! [:D]

My car went to the bodyshop today too for some paint and fettling.

He's not starting on it until the New Year and it'll be done by the end of January - good job I'm not in a hurry!

Doesn't look too bad Paul.....if they do a proper job it'll last. I had my sills/wings done a few years ago, all neww metal patches, and it's still good.

Wheels, no. They were newly refurbed when I bought it, and aren't too bad. Did suffer some damage to the laquer at the last service, so someone's not using a soft-socket! I suspect the guy who did the welding in May, more on that at some point as it was stripped out of the sill today and is, to say the least, appalling. I'm giving RPM a chance to look at it first. []

Today, all the rot was cut out, new pieces fabricated and welded in, and it's all looking pretty tidy again already. The only big patch is the OS sill, but as that was worst from the outside (let alone the bodge), it was to be expected.

Overall i'm amazed, it seems so simple and quick to repair that I wonder if we're being given the runaround by some of the large approved-type bodyshops. If one bloke can knock up perfect repair panels for two sills, including inner on one side, both rear wings and one front wing, fit them all, and be starting on stripping the car for paint by 4:30, then costs should be lower. Obviously, I've been extremely lucky here, mine isn't in, say, Peter Empson's league by a long way.

Got a great deal on the decals and stone guards, thanks to Matthew at Type 911 for his advice, and a new air filter on it's way as the badge panel's coming off. The current one is dated 2007, I had no idea it's not a standard service item. I really do hate menu servicing; give me a proper service please, look at the computer to see what was done when, and don't make me responsible for ordering some extra bits that should be essential IMO !
