...was the cost of fitting Gaz Gold coil over suspension to my track focussed S2. Just back from it's first outing on the track after the conversion and the difference is truly staggering. I can honestly say I have never felt I was going so fast on a track day before. Huge grip, huge fun and so fast it was scary. Limiting factor is now driver skill and tyres. So if anyone is dithering over the decision to change from standard suspension, please don't, the difference really is night and day. Now, where can I get some slicks ??

Oh, and a big thank you to EMC motorsports who performed the conversion!
 
Glad to hear you are happy with your upgrade - value for money seems hard to find these days. Did you upgrade bushings etc at the same time (e.g. brass) or did the $1500 just cover struts/shocks/springs and installation? Did you retain rear torsion bars?

Removing the torsion bars seems to be an (United States of) American obsession, but the cars dont work properly without them. Even if the TBs didnt locate the trailing arm, theres no sound reason to remove them; they dont weigh a great deal and the helper springs added to the rear dampers dont weigh much either.

Id be interested to hear what heights youve got the front and rear set at (and whether you have retained OEM strut mountings) and also the damper settings, although EMC valving is different to that in the retail kits.

What is the advantage of going the coil over route as apposed maybe just putting on some Gaz replacements for the standard dampers?
 
Stiffness. The standard suspension, even brand new M030 is soft by modern standards. Match to that some lowering and you will transform the handling immeasurably. Much better to spend on decent suspension than chasing HP.
 
Agreed and one will need stiff springs front and rear to make the GAZ setup worthwhile, they don' have any magic in there just a conventional twin tube shocker with low friction seals and valving designed to work with stiff springs. The really high tech stuff is 3 or 4 way adjustable monotubes but these are all mega money anywhere between double and 4 times the cost of GAZ (Intrax / Moton / Ohlins / AST / Proflex? etc.).

Getting a solution that has been properly developed and setup makes a huge difference, I was going 10 mph faster in some corners at Silverstone the other month than I did racing there in the same car last year on the same shocks. 50% at least down to correct spring rates and damper setup.
 
What spring rates you guys are using with GAZ ? My son ordered a set of GAT Golds for his 951 project. he should receive parts within a week.
 
About 4x stock S2 rate and with a rear wheel rate about 1/3 softer. Pretty much exactly the same as the US sites suggest for 944 track suspension kits such as the Bilstein escort cup stuff.
 
I won't pretend I am an expert in these matters....which is why I handed the car to EMC. AFAIK the bushings are left alone and the torsion bars are definitely retained. I think the spring rates are 400lb. I have the full settings written down somewhere but the rear shocks are the only ones kevin advises to adjust for the track. For the road they are set at 10 clicks (out of 20) and I experimented with up to 7 extra clicks for the track at which point everything stiffened up so that the tyres became the limiting factor. Toyo T1R,s loose grip after 5 hard laps. The track photographer caught a front inside tyre pawing the air as we cornered hard.
