Test Drive

I got my first test drive this morning on S model, and what did I think, comparing to my 997S gen 2.

I was impressed with the comfort, i took it over a concrete surface road which on my present car creates a loud roar from the tires. I noticed, it was a lot quiter in the 991.

I liked the new sports mode which is now standard, which dropped the PDK to 6th gear, and switched on the sport exhaust.I switched the Sport exhaust off since I wanted to hear what the car sounded with the sound symposer. With this, the engine noise was louder than my present 997. For me, the noise was just right without the sport exhaust being on, therefore I will not spec the sport exhaust system.

I also tried the sport plus mode, which for me unless I do track days is unnecessary, therefore `I will not spec it.

I liked the power steering plus option, which is good for parking.

I liked the auto start stop of the engine, which I was surprised of how quickly the engine started.

Overall, I was very impressed and have confirmed my deposit which I placed 6 weeks ago. Whether is justifies the £40K+ over my present Gen 2 is another question.

How did you rate the performance (specifically acceleration) and handling compared to the Gen II ??

I did not get a chance to test the handling because I did not drive on the country roads. The acceleration was excellent, even out of sports mode.

I forgot to mention, I did do the re badging with the option of 911 only.

Thanks for your impressions - the noise in the car is quite different, trading tyre noise for exhaust noise.
Have to agree with you on the buttock clenching difference between old and new prices[] Good looking car, you'll have there.

Talking to my sales chap today, everyone who has had a test drive so far has been very positive with several confirmed orders since Saturday.

• Michelin Pilot Super Sport N-rated

I have just put the non-n-rated PSS on my 997 and tyre noise almost disappeared over the old Pirellis. PSS are replacing Pilot Sport 2 - which Michelin are phasing out.
Not many miles thus far on the new PSS tyres but they are more comfortable, have more dry+wet grip and much quieter.

...only downside is that they are a little heavier than the old PS2's

I went for my test drive on Monday in an 'S'.

The PDK gearbox is so smooth the changes are too subtle to notice. An improvement over the current PDK.

The pdk works really well and now seems to anticipate what you want to do next!

The handling seems good but in the wet it was hard to fully judge. On straight line acceleration, the box went from 7th to 2nd if you floored it and the electronics easily sorted out the grip.

The stop start is rather disconcerting as every time one momentarily thinks 'Oh Shot it's stalled' then you think 'No, it's meant to do that'. You can disable the feature via a button or drive in Sports mode which also disables it.

The dash is more informative and I did like the speed limit symbol which is linked to the Sat Nav so you actually know the limit on unfamiliar roads.

The centre console is pretty but the button identification is at right angles to your eyes so to have to lean forward and look down to find out what they do. i guess one will learn where they are in time and not need to look!

All in all I was very impressed with the package and the general small tweaks to styling, and whilst I do not want a Carrera S, it was an indication of how good the Turbo will be. I know that I will have to wait even longer for a Turbo Cab, but I now feel sure it will be worth the wait.

With regard to the price, I feel that a loaded Turbo cab is going to be Ferrari money but then I ask myself do i really want the hassle of a Ferrari ?

Currently all the cars at our dealers have been shipped with Pirelli P Zeros. As usual, there's no choice on tyres, you get what you're given []

Am I correct in saying that there was scope to request particular tyres for the GT and RS models ?

This should be an option for the Turbo!
