'Zactly. Four is the number of pulleys you need to replace.ORIGINAL: 944Turbo
yes but its only the ones with bearings in that need replacing so not the water pump, cam shaft, 2 x balance shafts and crankshaft leaving just the 4 to replace

Interesting ... what's the fifth pulley on the S2 then?ORIGINAL: ChasR
As above regarding the Turbo. An S2 (3.0 16v) however does come with 5 pulleys, yet some listings (including a well renowned retailer not far from me) will only list 4 for the S2.
I thought that all 944's had pretty much the same lay-out for belts - I didn't know the S2 was different.

I'll try and find a diagram depicting the layouts. But in a nutshell, the balance belt layouts are the same for all of the 944s. The cam belt on the S2 however has an additional idler. It does not exert much tension onto the belt though, it looks like more a check idler (stop the belt vibrating etc.).
EDIT: Found a pic! You can see the extra idler on the S2 in between the crankshaft and tensioning pulley, where on the 8V cars there is not an extra pulley:
