Richard, the car was built over a 16 year period, has set 4 LSRs for normally aspirated 1 litre class and then had a small fire. Was totally rebuilt for 1 litre turbo action and shaken down by the gus who built it, but one of them is 70 and has had a heart bypass and the other did a pass at 265mph and scared himself I think... so they are stepping aside for a younger man to take the "wheel". She runs on a 314mph record and we think she's good for 325-340mph... but we will see!
To mention nothing of a young Director from the London Film School who has been nominated as a Star of Tomorrow by Screen International and has been selected for the short list for a BAFTA nomination for one of his shorts ....
What would it take to participate ?

Well as u might have guessed from some of my rantings, I've got a bit hacked off with the costs of modern GT racing... so I've decided to take on a new project...
Having spent a long while considering how fast I could get a 911 to go after my visit to Bonneville last year, I decided time (and the wife) weren't going to let me spend 9 days on the Salt each August to sort a new car..
So I've done a deal for something lightweight, rear engined, rear wheel drive with 500+ bhp ... but while in our spirit on here, I'm afraid she's not a Porsche... but BOY is she quick... we're targeting the Land Speed Record for 1 litre turbo engines which is a fraction over 500kph or 313mph...
They reckon it'll take me 2 years to get up to the speed, but when the Salt opens this August, Rick and "The Flower of Scotland" streamliner will be there to see if we've got what it takes.
Wish me luck?

Good luck with that project, Rick! I'd love to do something like that (I think! [&:])! WLSR has always fascinated me since Donald Campbell and Bluebird when I was a kid.

Tim, exactly the same for me, when you think I would become the 7th Brit in the 300mph club behind Sir Malcolm and Donald Campbell, Capt G E T Eyston, John Cobb, Richard Noble and Andy Green, pretty famous group!
Even Sir Sterling only managed 250mph...
Watch out for the blog on Evo magazine shortly...
Chris, if they get themselves to Bonneville and don't mind sleeping rough (ish) (i.e. bring a tent) as all the hotel rooms are LONG gone, then they are in. No cash contribution necessary,
What are the issues for the gear ? I'm guessing that it's not too difficult keeping salt out of it ? We have experience of Ice Driving and cold, but not so much of the heat etc ...
What timescales are you planning ?

Keeping salt out of the gear shouldn't be too much of a problem, it doesn't blow around like sand... and there is a motorhome and large trailer plus large area with tables under cover things can be sat on when not in use.
The heat is pretty dry, exceptionally dry in fact, so light long sleeves and trousers is the way to go, then make sure you put sun cream on the bottom of your ears and nose as the reflection in the troublesome stuff... similarly, wearing baggy shorts you REALLY don't want to be "Commando"!!! Heat won't affect the gear I'd imagine in any way shape or form.
Cheers

I'll look out for the blog Rick!
To add a little trivia to this, re the Campbell's... about 10 years ago I was seeing a girl from near Blackpool, her dad owns a large company in the 'street furniture' industry (in fact the red 'Dalek-like' bins at MSV circuits are made by them!), and the family also own (or at least did at the time) a motor museum in the Lake District. I noticed that Susan always wore a small broach of a little blue bird. It intrigued me and one day I asked her what the significance of it was. She said her friend Gina Campbell had given it to her! She was a friend of thier family and Bluebird (the boat) was to be displayed in their museum when it was recovered from the bottom of Coniston Water.
The same girl had another link that was relevant to this forum... she told me her mum used to go out with a racing driver (they were from Lancashire, that's a clue!) but she (Susan) couldn't remember his name... I thought nothing of it until one day she brought her mum to a race meeting at Oulton... we were stood in the pit lane and I reminded her to ask her mum... so she turned to her mum "Mum, who was that racing driver you used to go out with when you were younger?" "Oh, Brian... Brian Redman!" (Porsche 917 driver in case anyone doesn't know!)

Link to the blog there as well...
Starting to get pumped up, new dragster spec race suit (twice thickness and hence weight of a normal one) and lightweight crash hat being finished this week, we're all systems go for the Salt...
Tad nervous now.

As you mention, the temperature is really high over there but with virtually no humidity. The sun block/ covering up tip is really important as you burn up really quickly although if you turn up looking a bit vulnerable someone will always set you straight!
I wish I could be over there to support but will try and keep an eye on the blog at least.
I was chatting to a guy called Gabriel at the Silverstone classic who is aiming to be at Bonneville next year with a Brit built two wheel streamliner. He's aiming for 400mph. The project is called Angelic Bulldog for those interested. He may have to change venues to the same desert due to be used by the Bloodhound SSC team in Africa due to pressure from TV crews.
Great to see the Brits out there trying to regain/ hold onto land speed records in different classes.
Rick, you're a nutter but I'm in awe of this project. Wishing the absolute best of luck to you and the team!

IE. "EVERY DAY BABY!"
So tech inspection is Friday, then Sat thru Thurs we build speed until hopefully I am the proud owner of a Land Speed Record and a Bonneville "300 mph" Blue hat... sometime Tues or Weds if all goes to plan...
But the Salt is notoriously tough... it might all go wrong very early. Might be worth a phone call before you head out? PM me for my number if you are coming!!
Cheers for all the support boys, will try and stick updates on here if I get the chance... else watch the Evo blog
Rick
Hope things have been going well.
