Syncromesh issue?

Afternoon all, a bit of advice required please. I have a 996 C2, just over £100k miles, 6 speed manual. Over the last couple of weeks there has been an intermittent 'grinding' noise when selecting second gear, like you would hear if the clutch wasn't depressed properly, particularly when shifting down. Other than this there are no other issues with the gearchange or clutch operation. I am guessing that this is a problem with the syncro, however I know that there could be a number of causes of this, all advice welcome before I start spending money to sort it out.

It would be worth firstly checking that the cable mechanism associated with the gear change is functioning correctly.

Failing that then unfortunately, as you say, it does sound like weak second gear synchromesh. If you're able to double-declutch to eliminate the graunching this would confirm it. Alternatively there could be a problem with the gear selector itself, but either way it would mean a gearbox strip and rebuild.
