Suspension - Spax or Bilstien B6 & Poly bushes

Your mechanic has forgotten to put the wind deflectors on which help cool the brake disks under heavy braking.

Good to hear that they went straight on. I've been looking for that, but not OEM Porsche as I'd heard that some have been in stock for years, leading to early failure.

So Spax complete with springs by the look of it...did you do the rears as well, may I ask?

So, I'm in the middle of my shock refurb/upgrade. Got the B6's in boxes and the old struts off. The old struts are about 10 years old with maybe 20-30k miles on them so they should be good. They feel pretty soft in comparison the B6's which feel silky smooth. Question is, do I fit bump stops? Reason I ask is the 'factory' ones I took off are toast (see below), and the B6's have nice rubber sleeves to cover the shafts, but no sign of a bump stop as far as I can tell, but replacement factory stops won't fit under the rubber sleeves...

I *think* that my B6's came with bump stops. I do recall that the struts were far too thick for the standard bump stops.

This isn't helping you much but I don't know what to suggest. Given that finding ones to fit could be time-consuming then I'd probably do without them.

Front struts were last manufactured in December 2003. That's not a typo - it's 15 years ago.

If you check this out

they are making 968 front struts again, they will fit a 944 S2 or Turbo

They don;t need Bumps Stops no, they are inside the casing around the piston rod.

What you see at the top is the Cartridge, because the B6 Bilstein's are a Mono (single tube) Damper (Upside down).

The Piston rod is bolted and located in the bottom of the lower casing.

There's a lot on that list/link from Porsche that was always available, so I'm not sure that they've started making the front struts again - I suspect they're still offering from the 2003 batch. If anyone buys any, it would be helpful if they update us on the build date shown on the packaging stickers.

I had a pair of the 2003-built front struts fitted on my S2 back in Dec 2014 and after 5,000 miles all is good - no leaks, very happy. Porsche offer a 2 year warranty on these struts and the makers assured me there should be no problem with the age as long as they've stored in the Porsche warehouse correctly over the years.

Last I heard the standard rear struts were out of stock so it might not be currently possible to do a complete standard suspension refresh.

Irritatingly for me, soon after I fitted all new standard suspension, the Bilstein upgrade become a feasible option as people started to offer the required collar.

As much as I like my new standard suspension it would definitely be Bilstein for me.

Quick update, spent the bank-holiday weekend cutting up the old struts and welding on threaded inserts to make the ride height adjustable. Also manufactured my own collars for the B6 inserts as the German company suggested by this thread failed to get back to me about their inserts. Was fun machining the collars on my mates lathe and then using his welding expertise to weld the struts back together. Currently with the powder coaters and hopefully ready for collection tomorrow, so I can fit over the weekend....Pictures to follow....:)

Sounds like a nice job. I suspect that the adjustable ride-height biz may end up being superfluous but machining your own collars and then having it all powdercoated will make it very pretty!

Keep us updated.

So, powder coater's didn't come through for me yesterday, so had to satisfy myself with fitting the rear shocks alone. A couple of pics of the process to machine and weld on the inserts for the B6's attached prior to being powder coated...in multiple posts because the image sharing facility is so difficult...

Also with a delay, because apparently "you can't make multiple posts in such a short space of time" ....Multiple parts after cutting up the struts...
