surging idle when hot - ICV ?

Took the car for a run to view a job , gave it a bit on way back, so hot ,and then when I stopped at a roundabout it started surging 900 - 1800 rpm over and over - very rythmically !
Stopped turned off , restarted and same again drove on , drives ok , stopped and restarted after 5 mins and all ok again.
Driven it again since and all ok .
Any thoughts ,my first is ICV so will strip and ultrasonically clean.

ICV is a good start, next could be PFR, but when they go it tends not to be rhythmical. Easy first stage of pulling the vac hose off it and looking for petrol.

Yes did that Mike and no sign of fuel, also unplugged the DME temp sensor and this makes no difference when running ok - thought it should.? I did squeeze the vac pipe to the ICV and it did start to make a ticking noise so sounds as though that was ok so may have been stuck.

Wayne Schofield told me that the DME relies more on ignition timing changes to affect rapid control steps on idle speed. The ISV is more of a bulk setting, that does not provide responses as fast as ignition timing changes.

So, could it be the flywheel sensors, hows the car running off idle?

runs absolutely fine , no hesitation at all through out the rev range, just a one off occurence today , been out twice since and all ok.
Just a bit more description - it was as though I was gently revving the engine up and down with the throttle pedal.

it is the idle control valve and is situated on my S2 under the inlet manifold towards the front.Pain to remove but can be done without removing manifold. It has an elctrical connector and two hoses running to it.
Clarks garage website will give more detail.
