sudden hesitation and won't idle when hot.

Today my S2 suddenly started to hesitate under acceleration a couple of hundred yards from home, when I pulled in the engine cut out . Restarted fine but missing and smoking out of the exhaust (white smoke ) very lumpy wouldn't rev properly or idle.Stopped and started again but same again..Left for an hour started and all fine,took for a blast and all ok.FPR , ICV , AFM ? any thoughts ,what sequence of diagnosis should I follow.All ideas much appreciated.

DME relay first? If it's already new then no problem, but if it's old it might not hurt to replace it anyway for £20. [8|]
