Sub Frame

Hi, I am restoring a 1988 944, its failed the MOT on corrosion to the sub frame mounting area.

The sub frame itself seems very corroded and much of it has disintegrated follwoing my prodding with a screw driver.

I could weld some plates on to the exisiting sub frame to strengthen it but it would be good to replace with a new one.

Does any one know where I can obtain a new / good used 944 sub frame mounting - I need thd rivers side but would als replace the passenger side if they are available.

What part are you talking about.In your photo you are showing the end of the torsion tube and the body were the tube attaches.If you are talking about the torsion tube then I would be very surprised if it had corroded to the point that it had holes in it.As for the body then you will have to break out the welder and cut out all the rust and weld in new metal.More photo's would be good that way a copuple of us on here who have done that sort of repair will be able to tell you what to do.
 
I am talking about the triangular shaped piece that holds the bush for the trailing arm.

The inner sill strengthening piece appears to have been welded to this originally so you could not see the large hole which allows you to see the bush in my pictures. There is a hole all the way through to the inside of the car that obviously needs to be patched up.

There is also a square section that is buckled and corroded to the right of the picture.

This whole section looks like it is fabricated as a single sub frame unit and then welded to the car.

Right I know what you are talking about now.Yes that whole section is part of the body if you look for my post "what lies beneath" you will get a link to my photobucket.It has about 50 photos of how and what I repaired in that area.I had to rebiuld the whole of that area as mine was covered in corrosion.Have a look and then post again with any more questions.Where abouts in the country are you? as you may find one of us is near enough to come and have a look at it for you.also can you weld? if so then you should be able to fix it with out alot of expence.I used 1 6x4 sheet of 1mm and 1 sheet 6x4 of 1.5 mm as well as two sills from porsche and a floor pan from porsche .
 
As said you will just have to weld bits in, I have just had to do this to mine and not to bad if you can weld.

Thanks for pointing out your 'what lies beneath' post, I have similar corrosion on my 944.

Good to hear you fixed it with sheet. I have a 1 x 2 m 1.2 mm galvanized sheet plus some fairly large cut offs from 1.2 mm sheet.


I have purchased an inner strengthening panel from ebay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PORSCHE-924-944-968-SILL-REPAIR-PANEL-FITS-ALL-MODELS-INCLUDING-CABRIOLET-/190672783575?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2c64fbc8d7#ht_1038wt_1247).

I have just purchased a Clarke 160EN Mig welder and have managed to weld some plates together - probably not the best welding in the world but looks strong enough.
I'll be doing a bit more practice before attacking the car.

I'm in scotland just south of glasgow.Make sure you practice your welding alot before you start on the car.Try and make sure you are getting good penetration on your welds.I don't know where Ed325 is but he can weld as shown by the work he did on his car.I would put out a call on here for a local member who can weld who would be willing to help.Good luck and take your time concentrate on your welds.
 
Colin thanks for the advice I will certainly practice a lot. I don't have much to loose though as I didn't pay much for the car. It makes no sense to have this work done professionally as it would cost much more that the car would be worth afterwards.

I am concerned about that sub frame piece, it carries a lot of weight.

I can see the cardboard templates you made in you photo section, do you have any photos of how that bit finished up.
