Steering Wheel Repair

Hi all

Rather than spend a few hundred on a second hand steering wheel, does anyone know of a service that refurbs them?

Mind is the standard 4 spoke wheel with airbag, but it's very warn and faded, and the leather stitching has come undone in a few places.

I didn't realise the airbag wheel had made it into the S2 on this side of the Atlantic. Is yours like this?

Good question though, because I would not mind getting a bit of re-stitching done on my burgundy lozenge wheel in case I ever want to revert to standard appearance (am using a 968 CS wheel for everyday purposes).

Similar, I'll take a photo tonight and post it up. I should have done that first to be honest, but my car looked so shabby at the car show yesterday that I've made a spur of the moment decision to plough my new car savings into this one!

Re-stitching is very easy; using a thick thread and fairly thick needle you can re-do it every bit as well as factory. You need to take care to tick the knots in tidily but that's not hard. I did this on the standard-fit lozenge wheel on my S2 when it came badly unstitched (the old threads were hanging down like a pair of lace curtains) and it was as good as new when done.

I'd have thought you could re-colour with some shoe polish of the right type and a clean duster to polish it off with (that certainly brings black wheels up a treat.) If that fails then some leather dye would be your friend.

Oli.

Thanks Oli, I'll take a close look at it tonight and see if it can be rescued. If the actual leather has split around the stitch holes then I'm not sure what I could do then. I'll take some photos and post up here anyway.

You can buy a new steering wheel cover from Porsche and also from a few of the indies on here. And then sew it on yourself. If not then phone southbound and ask them how to do it.

That's a good call, I never knew you could do that. Something to look into.

I re-stitched mine, wasn't difficult, just have to take your time and be patient. Pull each stitch tight before progressing, use thick cobblers thread and as said before tie neat little knots.

I recoloured all of my cars black leather with Taragon leather dye from Amazon. It was about £8 a bottle, works well and doesn't rub off, even when wet.

If you want it done professionally, I can recommend Jacek at Royal Steering wheels.

I had a momo wheel covered for 110+vat or thereabouts

Thanks, I'll definitely contact them for a quote. How long did they take with yours?
