Steering Wheel Removal

I need to fit a new/used windscreen wiper switch (Carrera 1987). How is the steering wheel removed? Any hints on fitting switch?

You can prize off the rectangular centre section of the wheel (the horn push section). You'll then see a big nut in the centre and you'll need an appropriately big socket to undo it. Once undone the wheel will lift off (it tends to be a bit sticky on the splines but will pull off especially if pulled from side to side). There's really not much to it but if you've not got a socket I'd take out a mortgage - they're expensive) - you just need to be careful of the bits and pieces that make the horn work. Whats actually wrong with the switch tho'? I had a problem with mine, all it really needed was a good clean and a tweak of the leaf contacts. Cause the switch is all exposed its a doddle[]

Exactly that, but you'll need to take the nut and washer right off to get the hub far enough out to turn it a couple of splines.

I always remove the horn relay before removing the wheel, as it saves the horn going off when you replace the horn pad.

Disconnect the Horne it becomes annoying other wise its very simple

You should find a fuse and relay chart on the back of the fuse box cover.

Put the nut back on the shaft a few turns when you are tugging at the wheel.
Prevents a sore nose.

Lubricate the horn contact ring with a smear of electrical grease before replacing the steering wheel. This will prevent (or at least delay) the onset of the .dry graunching noise when turning the wheel

The headlight flashing option on my stalk packed up a while ago. I shall take a look at it some time soon. Could be the points arrangement on the switch or a replacement may be needed.

That's only partially true Paul - although the switch doesn't come apart, the dip / main contacts are exposed so can be accessed and attempts can be made to clean them. However in my experience this is probably futile (but still worth a try) as they are likely to have welded themselves together or will, at the very least, have a build-up of metal on one contact. This is caused by the high current passing through the contact and is the reason why the addition of a relay in the headlamp circuit is such a popular mod.
If you do decide to replace the switch, don't discount your local OPC as a source - with the club discount they can be very competitive.
