Steering rack servicing recommendations - 1981 924

Hi all,

I took my 1981 2.0l 924 Lux to have a pre-MOT inspection today and unfortunately there is a lot of play in the driver's side front wheel. This would be an advisory but since I'd like to keep her record clean as much as possible, I'd like to get this addressed.

The guys who I love at Clapham North MOT suggested I give Power Steering Services a call. They've given me a base price of £495 plus VAT to recondition the existing steering rack, and if I take the car in then they can have a look and quote me for labour too.

It seems like there aren't any new steering racks around and I should instead get my pre-existing one serviced.

It's an early 924 so no power steering and seems relatively basic, although what do I know? :ROFLMAO:

Does anyone recommend a place in London that will remove/refit the steering rack, refurbish it, and then do the tracking? I'd like to go to one that specialises in this stuff.

Many thanks,
Thea

Hi Thea,

Are you sure that the play is in the steering rack itself and not the track rod ball joint, or even the front suspension ball joints?

Since your steering is unassisted the rack repair should be quite straightforward and £600 plus labour sounds a bit expensive. Although this company is in Chester and would require removal of the rack and posting it to them, it might be worth giving them a call for advice and an alternative price, if only for reference:
