Steering lock issue

Hi, I think my coupe has a an unusual issue with the steering lock - it doesn't appear to be engaged -I can turn the wheels, lock to lock but the key will not go past position 1 - it hits a solid stop - anyone any ideas before I dive in there and start taking it apart?

I had this issue with my 91 turbo recently. I had to drill the captive bolts and use a stud extractor to get the mounting bolts out. Then remove the steering lock, and spray plenty of silicon spray into the locking mechanism. irina25661 on youtube has posted a good guide.
