Steering Heavier Than Usual

The wheel alignment centre (https://www.facebook.com/The-Wheel-Alignment-Centre-396151377064652/) in Southampton gets a lot of praise on Pistonheads. I’ve taken my Cayman there, and a Ford Fiesta, the owner operator is very fair and charges only for the adjustments he makes - in fact when I took the Fiesta in he didn’t charge for the initial diagnosis as once on the lift he identified a bent suspension arm. Both times I’ve only paid about £50 as few adjustments were necessary. He only does wheel alignments so will not try to sell you other services.

The rear wear does indicate something not right. someone like Parr will ‘baseline’ it properly for you and also give you good feedback on the steering load.

What would a normal wear pattern for the rear tyres be?

Given the negative camber they should wear more on the inside … I had thought that your Inner - Outer numbers were maybe reversed

It could be due to excessive toe-in Mark. As said, a full geometry check would identify anything out of spec and requiring correction.

It is the outer edges on both rears that have worn more. I received a video from my OPC and the Tech had written in white the values on the tyres.

Does anyone know what the geometry settings should be for my Cayman? It's a 718 base model on 19" wheels and PASM (10mm lower)?

Or will I only be able to get this from my OPC or a tyre specialist?

I am getting a bit frustrated with my OPC. I have been chasing the Service Advisor up for a response to an email I sent on the 8th October as I wanted to know what if anything further can be done to regarding the steering weight issue and also the cost for two new rear tyres as they are approaching 3mm and OPC says Porsche recommend changing tyres at 3mm. He asked whether I would be happier if they checked the front Geometry, which I said yes. I got the feeling they might do this FOC though he didn't commit to this.

I last spoke to him on Friday and he said he would email me by the end of the day. It's now end of Tuesday and still no response.

I don't want to get the Car geometry checked elsewhere until I know what my OPC might do. But equally I would like to get the geometry checked and tyres replaced sooner rather than later.

I have had a look in my manual in the logical places, 'Technical Data' and 'Tyres & Wheels' sections and I can't find any mention of wheel alignment settings.

I have a Chassis Set Up section at the rear, noted in the front index … GT4 only perhaps

Video not available but noted the comments re. rear tread and pressures … as others have said, has to be an alignment check next

Perhaps Brian Innes will have a before & after adjustment geometry printout from his old 718 GTS Cayman? He may not follow this forum now so it might be worth PM’ing him.

Whatever the spec values are, with that rear tyre wear pattern I would recommend getting a geo check and any necessary adjustment done before investing in some new tyres.

Does your car have power steering plus optioned? Maybe be another avenue to persue.

Did the OP ever confirm whether or not his car has the Power Steering Plus option? I can’t help wondering whether this is not giving the extra assistance at lower speeds.
